This Week

Monday make a plan.
Tuesday walk the path.
Wednesday clean spick-and-span.
Thursday do the math.
Friday play.
Saturday see a matinee.
Sunday pray.
My weeks are filled
with happy days.

Do you have certain days of the week that you do things?  What day do you do your laundry?  Change your sheets?  Have a music lesson?  Shop for groceries?  Do you have a day when you sit down to plan?  What is your favorite day of the week?  Of this week?  Can you write a poem about your favorite day?  Have fun writing.

SWEET DREAMS

I'm tired.
I'm sleepy.
I'm going to bed,
so ideas
I'm thinking
can swim
in my head.

Do you work out problems while you sleep? I often do.  If I'm having a problem with a story I'm writing, I frequently think through the problem while I sleep.  Or, just before I go to sleep, I think of all the things I need to do the next day.  While I'm sleeping my brain orders and simplifies all the tasks and in the morning my list seems much easier to get through. Did you dream last night?  Your challenge for today is to write a dream poem.  It doesn't have to be logical, but use good details.  This is your dream so you can make it anything you want. Have fun writing.

Today I can create an awesome day for myself because I am the director of my life.

TIME

copyright 2015, Joy Acey

Where does time go?
How does it fly?
I thought it was yesterday
but a month
has gone by.

Yes, how does time fly?  Have you been having a busy month?  Can you believe it is almost October?  I spent the weekend in Las Vegas at the Andalusian World Cup horse show.  I got to see hundreds of gorgeous horses perform, and I learned a lot about the horses' different gaits.  I had a great time, but I didn't work on my poetry while I was gone, so I owe you many poems for this month.  Have you been working on your writing?  Can you write a poem today about something you've done this month?  Did you watch the lunar eclipse last night?  Enjoy your writing.

Love is the most powerful force in the universe.  I am blessed every time I show myself and others love.

CLEAN HANDS WEEK

After I've been
outside to play
I turn on the faucet
and this I say:
Wash, wash
my hands in the sink
a good idea,
don't you think?

Louis Pasteur, the scientist who invented the process for pasteurizing milk, was one of the first scientists urging physicians to wash their hands.  A lot of germs, bacteria and other nasty stuff can be washed away with water to keep us healthy.  Washing your hands before you eat is especially important.  Can you try writing your own health related poem today?  Have fun and keep healthy.  What better way to celebrate Clean Hands Week?

Poetry is my response to life.

haiku

on the lady slipper
bending in the late day breeze
a dragonfly rests

Happy Sunday.  What did you do today?  What did you see?  Can you write a haiku about your day?  Have fun counting syllables.

THE BOSS

You are the boss.
Make your words
spin, whirl,
do-see-doh,
down the page.

Lift them up.
Let your words
soar, fly
send blessings
into the sky.

Because you are
the boss of your words.

Happy Saturday.  The fun thing about writing is you are the boss.  You get to pick which words you use and what you make them do.  Have fun writing today.  So if you were to talk to your words, what would you say?  Can you write a poem about that today?

LOOK

Look for the light
of tomorrow.
Dream of sunlight.
Plan, set goals,
write a to-do list.
Hold nothing back.
It is your hand
that writes
the next poem.
Believe you can.

Now it is your turn.  What will you write about today?  What inspires you?  If you'd like to share your poem, leave it in the comments below.  Thank you for stopping by today.

SO MUCH

Today is William Carlos William's birth date.

He wrote many famous poems, but he is probably best know for his Red Wheelbarrow.

so much depends
upon

a red wheel
barrow

glazed with rain
water

beside the white
chickens

This is actually a concrete poem.  Can you see how each stanza is shaped like a wheelbarrow?  A fun thing to do with this poem is to use the "so much depends" line and then use it to describe someone you know.

THE SURF BOARD

So much depends
upon

the surfboard
leaning

against his bed
room wall

waiting for
waves.

I wrote this one for my son who loves to surf.

 THE CAT

So much depends
upon

the wide window
sill

where the cat
poses

to look outside
at the birds.

THE PEN

So much depends
upon

the ball point pen
clicking

in his hand
while

taking his
test.

OK, it is your turn.  Start with an object that belongs to someone and write a poem that tells us about it.  Have fun writing.

LUNCH

My mom made this jello
and it kinda makes me squirm.
It's blue like ocean waters
and filled with gummy worms.
YUCK!

What is the most disgusting food you can think of?  When I was in Japan the pizza had baby octopi on it and I was given a dish of green oyster innards to eat.  Can you try writing a food poem today about all the yuckiest foods you can think of?  Have fun being gross.

Dragon Lily

Lily, a dragon,
on the first day of school
wore flowers around her neck
so she could look cool.

And when it was time
to go out and play,
Lily just sat
and sniffed on her lei.

So while other dragons
were breathing with flame,
 Lily was sweet
and acted quite tame.

MY PET DRAGON

I have a pet dragon
his name is Fred.
His scales often glow
and turn bright red.
Whenever I whistle
and call him by name,
Fred opens his mouth
and out breathes a flame.
I have to be careful.
You'd think I'd have learned,
that calling out, "Fred!"
will get myself burned.

Penny Parker Klostermann's new picture book THERE WAS AN OLD DRAGON WHO SWALLOWED A KNIGHT arrived in the mail today.  I won the book from a draw at Renee LaTulippe's blog NO WATER RIVER. The book is lots of fun and it inspired me to write my own dragon poem.  Your poetry challenge for today is to try writing your own dragon poem.  If you had a dragon, what color would it be?  What would you name it?  What would you do with it?  Have fun writing.

Poetry comes with silence.

PETE, MY PARAKEET

I have a pet parakeet
and I named him Pistol Pete.
The bird sings tweet, tweet, tweet
to everyone that he meets.
Whenever I come around
Pete is perching
upside down.

MY PUPPY

I have a little puppy.
He's as cute as he can be.
He always wags his tail
Whenever he sees me.

I took him to the park
To let him run and play.
And now he wants a walk
Every single day.

Home on the Beach

On the beach waves break.
A sunset picture it makes.
Cool sand for a seat.
Foam rushes to seagull feet.
Salt sprays the air.
I want to rest there.
Palm trees on the cliff
sway to their own riff.
I do not want to roam.
The beach is my home.

MY CAT

My cat
is a curious thing.
She stalks birds
'til they take wing.

If you had a cat, how would you describe her?  Can you write your own cat poem today?  What happens if you start with, "My cat is...?"

My cat
is a motor
she purrs to be fed.
All day she sleeps
upon my bed.

My cat twines
around my feet,
she purrs and purrs
for food to eat.

My cat
turns her nose
up at fish.
She pushes it
from her food dish.
