WHO IS IN THE TUB?

copyright 2014, Joy Acey

Someone is in the bathtub
and I bet you'd never guess
it's a hippo in my bathtub
and she's causing quite a mess.

She's splashing out the water
and causing bathtub ring.
But the worst part
of a hippo in my bathtub
is the songs she tries to sing.

Oh, I had so much fun with today's poem.  It got me to thinking about other animal poems I've written.  I've had penguins driving cars, a flamingo on a skateboard, even a gorilla in my refrigerator.  So, here is your poetry challenge today.  Pick an animal.  (I like to pick ones with interesting or amusing shapes.) Then put the animal in a setting. (I like to pick common place things.  I've written poems about a snake at a birthday party and a mouse in my lunch box.)   Now write a poem about what happens next.   Have fun playing with yur animals and settings.  Happy writing.

For more poetry fun, the Poetry Friday Roundup is being hosted today by Margaret Simon. Head over to Reflections On The Tech to join the party and read more fun poetry.  Thank you, Margaret, for hosting us today.

  2. Hippos are one of my favorite animals! The thought of one singing in my tub put a smile on my face. Thank you. = )

    1. The San Diego Zoo had a pygmy hippo named Marcus Allen, and he was the cutest little guy. Can you tell I like hippos too?

  3. What a cute hippo. Too bad he can't sing. I am going to try this activity. But I am terrible at rhyming.

    1. Hey Margaret, I struggle with rhyme too. But I keep practising. Let me know how it goes when you try this exercise. Thanks for hosting us today. You're the hostess with the mostess.

    1. Thank you Buffy. I quite surprised myself with the drawing. I didn't know I knew how to draw a hippo. Something magic happens every time I take out my colored chalks.

  5. Oh my, this is great fun, Joy. I can just imagine the giggles when kids read it, & then imagine their own animal there!

    1. Yes, I wish we could work together to present a workshop using this exercise to see what the kids come up with. Lots of giggles indeed.

  6. Poor hippo! She loves the acoustics -- too bad she doesn't have an appreciative audience ;-) Sweet illustration, Joy!

    1. I have a little spider.
      She surely loves the rain.
For when I take a shower
She comes floating up the drain.

Thanks for commenting on my illustration. I'm going to have to do more illustrations to go with poems.
