Celebrate! Happy 4th

Let's celebrate
the 4th of July
by shooting off stars
into the sky.

Let's celebrate
and all eat pie,
make mine peach
on the 4th of July.

Let's all lick ice cream cones.
I'll even buy
when we celebrate
the 4th of July.

The sun is so hot
I think I'll fry.
It's very sunny
on this 4th of July.

Let's swim across the lake.
Just give it a try
as we cool off
on this 4th of July.

We're spitting watermelon seeds.
Watching them fly
as we have a contest
on this 4th of July.

See the fireworks explode!
My-oh-my!
I sure like
the 4th of July.

What will you do to celebrate the 4th of July?  I think I'm going to be sitting on my lanai watching the explosions in three directions.  Can you try writing your own celebration poem?  Have fun writing.

Happy Poetry Friday

  2. Fireworks are a delight. Your lanai sounds like the best place to celebrate. I remember once seeing the fireworks over the East River in NYC. Spectacular. Never forgotten.

    1. I was on an airplane flying to England one evening on the 4th. It was amazing to see all the fireworks below. It was really different to view it all from above.

  3. I love a poem with "spitting watermelon seeds" in it! And I never miss an opportunity to bemoan the fact that a tiny little picture book by Rosemary Wells, Benjamin and Tulip, is out of print. It's a story of watermelon seed spitting!

    1. My kids and I used to sit on the from steps and spit into the rose bushes. You can imagine our delight when some of the seeds started to grow vines.

    1. Yes, we disposed of the ice cream maker the last time we moved. I guess I'm missing it.

  5. Thank you so much for the invitation to think about our fourth of July plans that will likely inspire lots of poetry! I plan to watch the fireworks over the lake this year. I will have my notebook ready!

    1. Please feel free to share your poems with us. The lake is the best place to be for July 4. I remember being at Bald Head Island, NC one fourth and there was a big golf cart decorating contest, and of course all the carts were the Freedom Parade.

  6. I can see the celebrations from my backyard, Joy, & while it's cool today, it's going to hot on Tuesday, just right for watermelon seed spitting! You've included all the right things in your poem. Happy Fourth!

  7. Those all sound like good ways to celebrate! Your poem reminds me of 4th of July celebrations at my grandmother's small town. All that's missing is the greased pig contest. This year we'll head to the park with friends to watch fireworks.

    1. I've only watched greased pig contests at the State Fair. We'd have a barbecue cook off. Small towns are the best, it is probably why I love living on a small island.

    1. Thanks, Violet. The parks at the beach plan to be full that day. I'm hoping red, white, and blue crepe paper streamers will be blowing from the trees.

  9. Fun list of lots of ways to celebrate. I'll add curl up on the couch and read...even though it doesn't rhyme!

    1. Mary Lee, reading can happen every day of the year, I think I'll take mine in a shady hammock with the ocean breezes wafting by.
