LITTLE CAT
The birds sing.
Little cat creeps.
The birds sing.
Little cat leaps.
Birds have all
flown away.
Little cat
is here to stay.
He sinks on haunches,
flicks his tail at the tip.
He washes his face
and licks his lip.
I like that verb creep I used in the second line. When was the last time you crept? Why were you going slow? Why were you trying to be quiet? Did you want NOT to be noticed? Were you trying to surprise someone? Since I think creep is such a great verb, how about using it in a poem today? Have fun writing creepy poems today.
Today is Poem in Your Pocket Day. Are you carrying a poem with you to share with friends today? What poem have you chosen? What poems did your friends share with you? I hope you have a happy poetry day.

ELEMONKOE
My ele-mon-koe
is amazing and neat
with an elephant's head,
a monkey body,
and two canoes for feet!
He trumpets his trunk.
Through the river he glides.
Splash and swish.
Eating peanuts and bananas
is his favorite wish.
Are you tired of manticore poems? I hope not. I'm still having fun. I enjoyed how the children thought canoes would make good feet. Remember, I live on an island where children participate in canoe teams for paddling competitions. This is a part of their culture and certainly good material for poems.
Happy Poem in Your Pocket Day. Did you carry a poem today to share with friends and family?
It is Poem in Your Pocket Day
and here's what I'll do,
I'll carry a poem
to share with you.
I'll take out my poem
and learn it by heart,
and then you'll think
I'm very smart.

HAPPY POEM IN YOUR POCKET DAY
I keep a poem in my pocket.
Let me share this one with you.
I keep a poem in my pocket.
It helps me when I'm blue.
I keep a poem in my pocket.
It's stuck in my heart like glue.
I keep a poem in my pocket.
I know the words are true.
I keep a poem in my pocket.
It gives me ideas I can chew.
I keep a poem in my pocket.
I know it by heart, don't need a cue.
I keep a poem in my pocket.
And its meaning grew and grew.
I keep a poem in my pocket.
Would you like to try it too?
Just keep a poem in your pocket.
That's all you need to do.
Share the poem in your pocket.
Toddle-oo.
It is national Poem In Your Pocket Day where people are encouraged to keep a poem in their pocket and share it with others today. This is a poem written for two voices. Your poetry challenge for today is to write another stanza to go in this poem. You can leave your couplet in the comments. I'm off today to my local library to help the children write poems and make pockets. I'll be reciting my poem CAPILLARY ACTION for them from The Poetry Friday Anthology for Science, edited by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong, published by Pomelo Books.

PROGRESSIVE POEM
Each day during the month of April I will add a line to this poem.
WHAT IS POETRY?
You can't write poetry on the computer. --Quentin Tarantino
You can't write poetry on the computer. --Quentin Tarantino
It is finding the truth, no need to lie.
It's munching on watermelon and letting seeds fly.
It's a letter that comes with a card in the mail.
It's the lacy silver threads left by a garden snail.
It's daffodil trumpets covering the hill.
It's a deer at the creek, drinking her fill.
It's giggling and laughing and being absurd.
It's reading a haiku and feeling each word.
It's a dragon who blows flames, loud and hardy.
It's fairies in the garden having a tea party.
It's the sound of a truck shifting its gears.
It's the feel of two soft puppy dog ears.
It's a bright sun rise and glowing moon shine.
It's a Carolina wren singing in a Lob-lolly pine.
It's a snowman rolled on a cold winter morn.
It's crows calling from tall tasseled corn.
It's the whisper of hummingbird wings in the air.
It's plaits and curls tied with bows in my hair.

It's spying a bird feeding her young.
It's pink cotton candy that melts on your tongue.
It's watching black ants as they march by.
It's watching black ants as they march by.
It's corn on the cob for the Fourth of July.
I had a coyote leap into my backyard yesterday morning and I wrote this haiku.
Desert coyote
gulping down a young rabbit
even the white tail
Now, for the good news, it's Poem in Your Pocket Day.
Tell all your friends. I'm giving away this orange t-shirt featuring THE POETRY FRIDAY ANTHOLOGY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL book cover. I'm doing this to celebrate the 2nd birthday on April 20, of Poetry for Kids Joy. I can't believe that I've made it to two years of posting an original children's poem every day on my blog. If you'd like the opportunity to win this t-shirt, just leave
your name in the comments below with a line about what poetry is to
you. Be sure to leave your name so I can contact you if you are the
winner. I will take entries from now until midnight between Friday and
Saturday (Pacific Standard Time, April 20, 2013.)
Happy Poem in Your Pocket Day.
