At just dusk
Fireflies flicker and flash
Waiting for star light
Sundown
And a deer
Walks across the road.
Tall pines
Reach toward the sun
And back.
I'm traveling and seeing things through fresh eyes. These three haiku capture some of my sights. Can you take some time today to look at your world and see it through fresh eyes. What do your ears notice that they have not taken the time to listen to before? Watch the trees. What are they doing? Can you find things to write a poem today?
Welcome
This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

In the dawn
across the lawn
comes a fawn.
Down the hill
standing still
deer eat their fill
wait the kill.

WHAT IS POETRY?
Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry.--W. B. Yeats
What is poetry?
It is finding the truth, no need to lie.
It's munching on watermelon and letting seeds fly.
It's a letter that comes with a card in the mail.
It's the lacy silver threads left by a garden snail.
It's daffodil trumpets covering the hill.
It's a deer at the creek, drinking her fill.
Happy Poetry Month. Oh, I'm having so much fun. I do love poetry. In talking to my sister yesterday, she said, "Your progressive poem looks like so much fun, I wish I could play."
So, here is your chance, if you'd like, in the comments, leave your own line or couplet on What is Poetry to you. Start with It's.... and then fill in the blank. Have fun. If you need a day or so to think what you'd like to add, that is fine. Over the weekend, I'll try to add some of your lines to the poem.

Three Spotted Deer
Oh dear,
what do I see?
Three spotted deer,
One, two three.
They will munch
bark from the tree.
Those three spotted deer
walking by me.
There is a homophone/homonym in this poem. Can you find the two words that sound the same but are written differently and have different meanings? Yes, dear and deer.
I do like writing counting poems because they lend themselves to being read by two voices. I guess I could make the last line "One, two three" to repeat the counting. Which do you think would be better?
When I young we jumped rope to the chant:
When I went to sea, sea, sea
Oh what did I see, see, see?
Sea and see are another homophone/homonym. Can you think of others? Knowing homonyms is very useful in writing poetry. Can you write a poem today that uses either counting or homophones/homonyms? Oh, this could be fun.
I've already thought about hare/hair, and bare/bare. (Red/read and two/too are homonyms/homophones also.) Write on!
