I made you a valentine
cut a heart out of red
slipped it under your pillow
where you go to bed.
Sent you all my love,
hoped you would see
the card I had made
and signed simply ME.
You were so tired
when you went to bed
you didn't see the love
underneath your head.
The paper got all wrinkled,
crumpled and bent
as you broke my heart
and the love that I sent.
WOW! I say WOW! because this poem surprised me. When I start writing poems, I'm never sure where I'm going to end up--where the poem will take me. Is writing poetry like that for you? This isn't a happy poem. Is it funny to you? I think I'm going to have to go back and try again. Have you ever had your feelings hurt? What did you do about it? Did you just feel sorry for yourself? (What a great phrase sorry for yourself is.) Did you mope, cry, laugh, get even, or did you take positive action? Can you write a poem today about a time when you felt hurt? Or you can try making it a persona poem--write in the voice of an animal or object, real or stuffed. Do have fun writing today.
Love makes the world go round, do something to brighten a friend's day.
Today is Poetry Friday. You can find more poetry here.
Thank you, Penny Parker Klostermann at A Penny for Her Jots for hosting the Poetry Friday Roundup this week.
It's not a happy poem, but it makes me think. How many times have I failed to notice a gift of love that someone tried to give because I was too tired or too wrapped up in myself. Thank you for the reminder to pay attention and to appreciate.
ReplyDeleteA card made with tender loving care.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting that ending either - but surely could ring true for a child whose parent, perhaps, didn't notice a heartfelt gift.
ReplyDeleteHoping YOUR Valentine hearts are all happy ones.
Your poem is a LOVEly reminder, Joy, for us all to pay attention...in our relationships and our poetry. =)
