I Am Who I Am

I push my way
    out of a cocoon.
I dry my wings
    in the sun until noon.

Then I'll flit
     and flutter by
Because I am
    a butterfly.

This is a persona poem. It is written in the voice of the butterfly.  Many riddle poems are also persona poems when they ask the question, "Who am I?"
Can you write your own persona poem.  Think of a common object.  It could be your backpack, lunch box, your dog or even your goldfish swimming around in a bowl.  Write a poem in that object's voice.  What would your goldfish want you to know?  Or write a riddle poem.  What ever you do, remember to use your five senses and have fun with your creation.

Modern Haiku

the ancient path blooms
     buttercups, bluets,
          pots of gold

These flowers aren't blooming yet, but still my eyes crave their color.  I love the delicate purpley-blue color of bluets.  They have long thin stems.  And the name of the yellow clumps of flowers--pots of gold.  It is like the person who named them stumbled upon a treasure.  Do you have a friend you would call a pot of gold?  Someone who is a great treasure to you?  Maybe these are flowers found at the end of a rainbow.  Can you write your own poem about pots of gold?  Have fun thinking and being creative.
This poem is a modern haiku because it doesn't stick with the traditional 5-7-5 syllable pattern.  The season is in there though.  What season do you think this poem represents?  And what meaning do you think is in "the ancient path"?
I'm going to get out my water colors and see if I can paint a picture to go with my poem, perhaps you'd like to try that with your poem too.  Have fun.

Bee's B

Bright yellow buttercups
blooming in Bonneville
bit off by Bernard
our blustery Brahma bull.

Back in the barn
baby sheep are bleating,
blue birds are singing,
black beetles are eating,
and baby bunnies are munching
those  blooming butter cups
to a tune buzzed by bumblely bees.

This poem uses a lots of "B" words.  when it is repeated at the beginning of the work, that is called alliteration.  When it is repeated in the middle or end of the word, that is consonance.  Can you pick your own letter from the alphabet and write a poem repeating that sound often in the poem..
