TRICK-OR-TREAT

I'm going trick-or-treating
with this BIG candy sack.
I'll have to start out early.
It'll be a while before I'm back.

I'm going to fill it full
with every kind of candy
and then I'll share with you.
This Halloween is dandy.

I haven't bought any Halloween candy yet?  What is your favorite kind of treat?  What do you like to get? Can you try writing a poem about trick-or-treating or Halloween candy?  Have fun writing.

Seven Ghosts

The Monday ghost is pale and white.
The Tuesday ghost is out of sight.
The Wednesday ghost floats on air.
The Thursday ghost isn't there.

The Friday ghost yells BOO, loud and mean.
The Saturday ghost can't be seen.
The Sunday ghost is a real dandy,
he likes to steal your Halloween candy.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!  So, I reached my goal, a month of Halloween related poems.  I hope you have fun trick-or-treating tonight.  Can you write a color poem today? Think of all the colors that go with Halloween.  Orange pumpkins, yellow moon, red apples. white ghosts, brown leaves.  Now have fun writing about that.

DOORBELL RINGS

Trick-or-treaters stand at my door,
keep demanding,
wanting
some
cookies, candy
apples
gum,
leaving nothing--
not a
crumb.

   Today's poem is another zeno.  I told you I thought they were addictive.  I worked with some seniors writing poetry today in their retirement community.  I shared the zeno form with them.  Lee Chutkow and Arelene Sikkink helped to write this poem.

Trick-or-Treaters

Two trick-or-treaters
marched up a hill
to fill their bags with candy.
They both yelled, "BOO!"
to frighten you
then called you namby-pamby. 

    I'm still working on Halloween poems.  There are some slip or off rhymes in this poem.  You might call it assonance rhyme.  Can you write your own poem for a treat today?  Have fun writing? 

I'm discovering
in my life
the best things
aren't really things.
I am finding
what I like best
is the happiness
that you bring.

For when I'm sad
and gloomy,
you always bring
a smile.
And when I'm down
and feeling sad
you come
and stay awhile.

Sometimes
you feed me 
candy.
Sometimes
you read a book.
And when 
I really need a friend
I don't have far
to look.


    Today's poem was written especially for you. I was thinking about you and all the fun things you do for me when I wrote this poem. Thank you for being a friend.  Thank you for making my days sunny.
     For a fun exercise, can you figure out how to read this poem with two or more voices?
   Is there someone you are grateful for?  Can you write a poem for them today?  Have fun writing.

CHOCOLATE

I  like chocolate
chocolate pudding,
chocolate cake,
chocolate cookies,
I like to bake.

Steaming hot chocolate,
chocolate pie,
and chocolate éclairs,
I like to try.

Chocolate frosting,
chocolate candy,
chocolate cupcakes,
are just dandy.

When I'm hungry
and want a treat,
chocolate is what
I like to eat.


     Today's poem is a list poem.  All it does is list all the chocolate foods I could think of and start with a statement.  The poem fits Abraham Lincoln's guidelines for writing a speech--Tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em.  Tell 'em.  Tell 'em what you told them.  Can you write your own list poem today?

GOOD MORNING

Wouldn't it be wonderful
to wake each morning from dreams
of an enchanted forest
and gossamer faerie queens.

To rise from a candyland playground
filled with peppermint slides,
where animals speak your language
and hummingbirds give you rides.

I'm certain this would be delightful
to wake up, what would you say?
It's sure to put a smile on your face
at the start of each new day.


    Wow!  I had a crazy dream last night and I'm thinking about writing some dream poems.  Did you have a dream last night?  Can you write a poem today about a dream?  Have fun writing and thinking about dreams.

Christmas Candy

I told you red and white were the colors of Christmas for me.  I especially like peppermints at this time of year.

Peppermint candy,

makes my mouth sparkle with spice.

They're called starlight mints.

     All right, now it is your turn to write a poem about all the different kinds of candy you like to eat at this time of year.  What candy ends up in your stocking?  Using peppermints makes a great writing exercise because it has a wonderful smell, the wrapper makes an enticing sound as you unwrap it.  There is both texture and taste that change as the candy melts on your tongue or crunches into smaller pieces.  I hope you have a peppermint to eat while you write your poem.  Do I need to say enjoy?
