Monkey

copyright 2014, Joy Acey

A monkey sat
and stared at me.
I wondered what he
thought he'd see.

He chattered, chirped.
I heard him cry.
This monkey was
one noisy guy.

Did he want my peanuts
to take away?
Or was he just asking
me to come play?

My drawing is of a velvet monkey, which is very common in Kenya.  They may gather in groups of 30 or more and are equally adapt in trees or on the ground.  I saw one of these monkeys just outside my tent.  He stole my little package of M&Ms, the rascal and then came to the tent flap and stared at me like he was begging for more.  The velvet monkey has a black face and black hands and feet.
If the monkey could write a poem in his voice, what do you think he'd say to me?  Have fun writing your poem today.

COYOTES SING

Yips, yaps, howls
echo over the lake
Coyotes so noisy
they keep me awake.

It's 3 AM
the moon is bright.
Coyotes are chirping
and yapping tonight.

It's 4 AM
they are singing some more
I think I'd rather hear
coyotes snore.

I didn't get a lot of sleep last night.  I think the coyotes were celebrating the weekend.  So here is a fun list poem to try--write a poem about the things that keep you awake at night.  Have fun.

I'm not sure if I really need the three stanzas to tell this story.  I'm trying to condense the content to two stanzas.  But then again this poem may want to be a form poem that requires a repeating line like a triolet, or a villenelle.  Oh what fun.  I get to play with this some more.

I've already condensed the information into a haiku, but you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see that.
Thank you for reading my drafts of poems.  I really appreciate it. You do make poetry fun for me.

Quail

A family of quail
went for a walk today
chirp-cheep, chirp-cheep
they seemed to say.

"Come on children,
let's hurry away,"
scuttle, scuttle, run
across the street
and out of the way.
Chirp-cheep, chirp-cheep.

I saw a covey of about 20 quail on my walk this morning--two adults, half a dozen adolecents, and the rest were small little chicks.  it was fun to watch them hurry away across the road.
Lately I've been observing that the smaller the bird the prettier their song is.    Would you agree?  What is your favorite bird song?  Can you write a poem about birds?  Do you feed the birds?  Would that make a good title?  Have fun.
