Mr. T. Speaks

This is a poem for two voices.

"Gobble! Gobble!"
Said Mr. Turkey.
                              "I'm running to get away."
"Gobble! Gobble!"
Said Mr. Turkey.
                              "It's almost Thanksgiving Day."



     If you could talk to Mr. Turkey what do you think he'd say?  What would he do?  Where would he go?
(I have it on good authority a lot of turkeys go to Florida for the holiday.)  Can you write the next verse, about what Mr. Turkey would say?
     Oh, I can see this developing as a counting picture book.
      On the first of November
Mr. Turkey said,
       "I think I will dye
        all my feathers red,
        then folks will think
         I'm a boa instead."

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

1 Pumpkin, a jack-o-lantern to make.

2 Sugar cookies in the oven to bake.

3 Owls hooting WHO-WHO-WHO.

4 Ghosts prowling to shout BOO!

5 Bats circle with their wings.

6 Cats on the fence posts howling-sing.

7 Costumed children ask for a treat

    and wish Happy Halloween

       to all they meet. 

     Halloween is a fun holiday where we get to dress up and pretend to be someone, something or somebody else.  Will you go trick-or-treating?  Do you have a costume yet?  Have you decided what you will be this year?  Your challenge for today is to try writing your own Halloween poem about your costume.  Have fun.

FIVE LITTLE RABBITS

Five little rabbits
climb through the warren door,
one hops off
then there were four.

Four little rabbits
hop round the mesquite tree,
one jumps away
then there were three.

Three little rabbits
hop in the morning dew,
one nibbles grass
then there were two.

Two  little rabbits
having so much fun
see a wild coyote,
off they run.

One  little rabbit
drinks from the pond, so blue,
he jumps over
to wish
HOPPY EASTER
to you.


     I hope you have a great day.  My husband is making hot cross buns for breakfast and we're eating outside because it is such a lovely day.  Your challenge for today is to write a poem about a rabbit.  Have a hopping good time.  I hope you're surrounded by lots of good eggs.

FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS

Five little pumpkins

sat in a row

on a pumpkin vine

they grow and grow.

The first little pumpkin

grew so small.

The second little pumpkin

grew very tall.

The third little pumpkin

grew squat and flat.

The fourth little pumpkin
grew round and fat.

The fifth little pumpkin

grew and grew.

It grew so BIG

we didn't know

what to do.

We used a tractor

to move the thing.

Started carving and

didn't finish until spring. 

     This is a counting poem for Halloween.  I bet you know another Halloween counting poem, or you can write one of your own.  There are bats and toads, cats, owls and witches you could count, up or down. Don't forget candy, apples, monsters, ghosts, warts or scars for other possibilities.  Have fun writing your poem.  Please share your creation with me.

Leaf Cutter Ants

No litter on the jungle floor

ants cut it up and then do more

they carry the leaf pieces far away

having a happy leaf cutter day.





     If you look carefully, you'll see the ants. each tiny little leaf piece is being carried on the back of an any. 
     Do you remember the chant about the ants--the ants go marching one by one?
It is a counting chant. so here is your challenge for today, write a poem about an ant, or write a counting poem.  Have fun writing.

BLACKBIRDS

 

ONE blackbird

sat on a scarecrow.

TWO blackbirds

lit in a tree.

THREE blackbirds

ate at the cornrows.

FOUR blackbirds

flying free.

FIVE blackbirds

sang a raucous song.

Caw, CAW, Caw,

All day long.

DOLPHINS

One, two, three
gray dolphins
(counting, hold up three fingers)
glad to be alive,
(make swimming motions with arms)
deep in the ocean,
(bend over, hands stretching toward floor)
down they dive.
(squat)

Three gray dolphins
(hold up three fingers)
swimming in the sea,
(make swimming motions)
up they jump,
(arms stretch high over head)
One, two, three.
(jump three times)

     Oh, I had fun writing this action rhyme.  So this is today's challenge.  Write your own action rhyme.  Close you eyes for a moment, when you open them write your rhyme about the first thing you see.  I actually tried this and here is what I came up with:

One television set
(hold up one finger)
feeling sad and blue.
(use a finger to outline a frown on your face)
He turned around
(turn around)
and then there were two.
(hold up two fingers)
(Or you could start with one child being the TV and have a second child join him.)

Shoes Counting Rhyme

Shoes

This shoe sat in the closet.

This one lay on the floor.

This shoe raced for the playground.

This shoe danced out the door.

This little shoe, the hardest to keep,

fell from baby's foot, while he was asleep.
