Manticore V

My manticore is a gho-che-at.
He has the head of a ghost,
the feet of a cheetah,
and the body of a very scared cat.

He runs fast outdoors
with his cheetah feet
hunting for fish and souls 
to eat.

He wears a Hawaiian lei
to say Aloha
every day.

  Who ever would have thought to put the head of a ghost on a manticore?  Only the children from Kapa'a Elementary School.  I think this came from the idea that a manticore is a mythical beast.  Isn't the creativity wonderful?  And then to follow through with the idea that a ghost eats souls.  Some thinking is going on.  Wonderful!  I've never had a manticore poem go in this direction before and I love it.  Bright and very creative.
   Can you try writing a manticore poem today?  Maybe you can get your friends to help by suggesting interesting shapes to patch together.  Don't forget to try to use your five senses when writing your poem. 

Seek new paths for your creativity.

The Sandman

The sandman went out
on Halloween night.
The ghouls and ghosts
gave him a fright.
He dropped his bag
out of arms reach
and that's how we got
Miami Beach.

    You can fill in your favorite beach in the last line.  What makes a beach?  What can you do at the beach?  Would you like to write a beach poem today?  Have fun.

spooky ghosts
float through the door.
5, 6, 7, 8
they're rushing in
can't be late.
9,10, then 10 again.
They're laughing
loud and hardy
20 ghosts
having a
Halloween party.

    Here is your challenge for today-- make a list of all the Halloween related words you can think of.  My list had 22 words.  Now I'm going to try to write poems using those words.  Have fun making your list.  Can you write a list poem using your words?  Happy writing.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

1 Pumpkin, a jack-o-lantern to make.

2 Sugar cookies in the oven to bake.

3 Owls hooting WHO-WHO-WHO.

4 Ghosts prowling to shout BOO!

5 Bats circle with their wings.

6 Cats on the fence posts howling-sing.

7 Costumed children ask for a treat

    and wish Happy Halloween

       to all they meet. 

     Halloween is a fun holiday where we get to dress up and pretend to be someone, something or somebody else.  Will you go trick-or-treating?  Do you have a costume yet?  Have you decided what you will be this year?  Your challenge for today is to try writing your own Halloween poem about your costume.  Have fun.

ANOTHER GHOST POEM

Little Monster
shivered in bed,
he pulled his covers
over his head.

Moans and whispers
gave him a fright,
he thought he heard
a ghost in the night.

His mother asked him,
"What's the big deal?
Ghosts who eat monsters
surely aren't real."


     I thought I was done with ghost poems for a while, then I saw a picture of a kid huddled in bed afraid of the monster hiding under his bed.  I had to write the poem of the monster and the ghost.  I can see a picture book developing from this idea but first I want to finish a story about Guilda a Quail.  Things are picking up.  I hope you are keeping busy.  Can you write another ghost poem today?  If a monster and a ghost were going out together, where would they go?  What would they do?  Oh my goodness, what would happen if a monster, a ghost and an alien were all friends?  (This could start a whole new line of jokes.)  Have fun writing your poem.

A GHOST AT THE DOOR?

The wind is whistling.
The door rattles a lot.
Is there a ghost there?
I surely hope NOT.


 I had so much fun writing about a ghost yesterday, I thought I'd try again today.  Where else can I place the ghost?  

The noise scares my dog.
She runs for her bed
then uses her paws
to cover her head.

    Can you write a poem today about something that might scare you?

The Ghost

There is a ghost in the bathroom
and he's not very nice.
He's stinky and noisy
and makes sounds like mice.

He rattles and moans
then leaves in a rush,
but first grabs the handle
and I hear him flush.


     This poem had me giggling.  Once I had that first line, I knew I was going to have fun writing this poem.  I actually like ending on the "sh" sound which lets the poem end in a whisper.  Can you write a poem today that features a line ending in a "sh" sound?  Have fun writing about your own ghost. Maybe she is in the kitchen eating the chocolate cake and leaving crumbs.
