This manticore has a squid head, turtle body and cat feet. We called him a squiturat. He also is wearing a tutu and glasses.
Sebastion, my squiturat
loves ballet,
except he's fat.
He can't leap
off the ground,
with cat feet,
he falls down.
This is another manticore poem, written with the second graders at Kapaa Elementary School in Kauai, Hawaii. Can you tell I had a really good time working with the hildren?
Can you try making your own manticore poem. Take three animals, or objects and piece them together and then give the creature you've made a name. Where does your creature live? What does it eat? What does it like to do? Have fun creating and writing your poem.
E mahalo kakou i ka mea loa'a. Let us be thankful for what we have. A Hawaiian proverb.
Welcome
This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

SURPRISE
A surprise
makes
your
eyes
grow wide
and
your
eyebrows
rise.
BOO!
I hope you have a great day, doing what you need to do. Thank you for taking time to ready my poem. If you have a little one in your home, take time to play with that person too. In fact, take time to play today--you need it too. May this be a blessed day for you.

I went to the eye doctor,
the doctor said
I need glasses.
I went to the eye doctor
the doctor said
I'd be able to read
the board better.
I went to the eye doctor
and the eye doctor said
I should sit in the front row.
I was just worried
everyone would call me
"four eyes,"
but nobody did.
I can see better now
and I like sitting
in the front row.
I'm getting better
and better
at my reading.
And Wanda
who also wears glasses
helps me with reading
and I help her with math.
We're both wondering
how old we need to be
to get contacts
and change the color
of our eyes.
Wanda says
she wants to get
the mirror kind
like the character
in her video game.
Sorry, I'm running really late today. I had an emergency visit to the ophthalmologist (eye doctor).
Everything is fine, but it did take up a big chunk of my day. Do you have a favorite eye color? Can you write a poem about it?

I Love Gram a Lot
Grandma loves to read in bed
says a book just hits the spot.
Tonight she can not read to me,
her glasses she forgot.
My Grandma, my grandma,
her glasses she forgot.
I will run to get them
because I love Gram a lot.
Grandma wants a soaky bath,
hot water hits the spot.
Gram says she's a wrinkly prune--
a bath towel she forgot.
A towel,a towel,
oh Grandma has forgot.
I will run to get her one
because I love Gram a lot.
Do you do things to help your parents, your grandparents, brothers or sisters? What are they? Would you like to add verses to this poem, or write your own poem about the things you do to help? Have fun.
