MOONBEAMS

Trap a moonbeam.
Catch a star.
Keep them with you
in a jar.

Sparkling starlight,
shining moonbeams
These are the things
that make up your dreams.

With a jar of moonbeams
and stars bright as the sun,
you will find happiness
and days filled with fun.

I WILL SAY YES

Today I will say YES
to the sunshine brightening the sky,
it's beauty so wondrous
it enriches my eye.

I'll say YES
as I dance on my way to school.
No cares. No worries.
I'm one dancing fool.

I'll say YES
when you ask me to come play.
I'm floating on a cloud.
Up, up and away.

I'll say YES and smile
to all I meet,
I'll even wave
to cars in the street.

YES to new things
I'll try, YES, YES, YES.
I know it will bring me
much happiness.

   I was reading a blog post yesterday at Radio, Rhythm and Rhyme from Matt Forrest and he mentioned saying YES.  It reminded me of being in a poetry workshop with him at the Highlights Educational Foundation Barn.  Any time we had an exercise or an activity to do as a group, Matt would be the first to say YES, let's give this a try and see where it takes us.  So this poem is for Matt with a message for all of us.  What can you try today that you haven't tried to do before?  For your poetry challenge today, can you write your poem in a form you haven't tried before?  What ever you do, try having fun today and say YES.

TODAY

Today,
I'll try to
unbutton myself
let my heart
fly free.

Today,
I will let
my imagination
soar like a hawk
searching the skies.

Today,
I will chase
clouds floating above
changing shapes
on a whim.

Today,
I will sing
to the birds
and find happiness
in every flower.

Today
I will have fun
being me.
I will write
this poem
for you.

   What will you do today?  What makes you happy?  What gives you joy? As long as you're living, you might as well live big.  Have fun today.  What can you do to help someone else along their journey today? Now, can you take your answers to these questions and shape them into a poem? Have a grand time writing.

     I hope you are having a great beginning to the new year.  Are you writing resolutions?  I've been thinking about a few but I haven't gotten around to writing them down.  Your challenge for today is to write one resolution of something you'd like to do this year.  Have a thinking day.  Enjoy.

Purple Finch

Two purple finch
sat on a telephone line,
said one to the other,
"Oh I opine
that today
will be 
sunny and fine."

Said the second finch
to the first,
"I think this weather
is the worst--
desert living
is a curse."

"Ah," said the first finch,
"it all depends
on where your happiness
begins and ends. 
I know I can make this
a very good day,
but I will allow you
to have your say."
 
  Oh my goodness, that does need work, but I had so much fun thinking about the conversation between the two finch sitting on the wire this morning.  The bright purple male, who is really red, probably was saying "Hey, Honey want to come check out my nest?"  It is definitely that time around our house where all the animals are pairing up.  Can you write a poem today that is a conversation between two of something?  What do you think your shoelace would have to say to your shoe?  Could your spoon have something to say to your morning oatmeal?  What would a washrag say to your face, or your ears?  I know you can have fun with this prompt.  If you'd like to share your poem, please leave it in the comments below.
