MOON MUSINGS

I look out my window
and what do I see?
A big, round moon
looking at me.

I wonder what happens
when I go to sleep
with the moon up there
and our world 
for him
to keep.

What does he see?
What does he know?
When the sun comes out
where does he go?

haiku

Maasai Giraffe eats

Umbrella Acacia leaves

stretches his long tongue

Did you know there are three kinds of giraffes? Reticulated, Rothschilds and Maasai. Each one has a different coat pattern. All are very tall. They each have a different habitat. Their long black tonguew can be 18 inches long to reach out and grasp leaves.

Learning about animals can be fun. Can you select an animal to write a poem about today? Enjoy your writing.

MY YOYO

My yoyo is a marvelous thing
it climbs up and down
on its yoyo string.
I roll my yoyo
to stay in the deep,
I've taught my yoyo
how to sleep.
I toss my yoyo out
Around the World,
my yoyo can whirl,
my yoyo can twirl.
Sometimes I do 
make a mistake
the string starts to fray
and then it breaks.
So,
if you come to play yoyos
there is one thing
you can bring
it is a pocket
of extra
yoyo string.



Still, we've had no rain.
Still, the temperature is above 100 today.
Still hot winds blow
and the best way
to keep cool
is to be still.

It is so hot..., can you write your own hot or wet or dry poem today.  Just have fun writing.

Let's Be Pals

Won't you please
come for tea?
Bring you doll,
arrive at three.

We'll sit and talk,
have a good time.
I'd like you to be
a friend of mine.

We can eat cake,
us two gals.
I hope we'll become
the best of pals.

     So did you remember to turn around three time this morning and say, "Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit," to have a lucky month?  What are some other things you do for good luck?  Can you write a poem about luck today?

A TIGER BY THE TAIL

Outside my window
a tiger whiptail lizard
climbs the garage wall,
pauses to do push ups,
rushes forward,
then stops in the sun.
He looks, left, then right,
blinks his eye
then scoots to the roof
to disappear from my sight.
There are days
I wish, I too
might rest in the sun
always moving upward.

     I bought a new reference book while I was at the Book Festival.   I used it for this poem.  LIZARDS OF THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST edited by Lawrence Jones and Robert Lovich, is a photographic field guide I plan on using to help me identify all the different kinds of lizards around my house.  Using field guides is a great way to identify the birds, insects and plants in your part of the world.
    Your poetry challenge for today is to write a poem about something natural you can see.  Have fun writing.

MY WISH FOR YOU

Goldfinch at the feeder;
hummers at their dish
a happy sunny day for you
is my Valentines wish.


     A very happy Valentines Day to you.  Can you write your own Valentines wish poem today?  Have fun writing.

THE YETTI

Knocking at my door
a furry yeti,
held out his hand
all hairy, sweaty.

I was scared.
Thought I'd be dead.

Tick-or-treat,
was what
the yeti said.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN.


     I'm still playing with my Halloween rhyme. Have you tried it yet?  I had two other ideas.
One was to try using fairy tale characters.


Knocking at my door
a princess with her pea.
She held out the legume
to hand it to me.

She was distressed,
found a pea under her bed.

Trick-or-treat,
 the princess said.

Happy Halloween.

     Then, the second idea, to try writing the poem as a reverso--a poem that makes sense read from the top or the bottom.  With a tiny bit of tweaking, I made it work for the princess.


Happy Halloween
the princess said

Trick-or-treat,
She'd found a pea under her bed.
She was distressed
to hand it to me.

She held out the legume
the princess and the pea--
knocking at my door.
