Word Play

When I go to bed
at the end of my day
that is when
the words
come out
to play.

They come running
from under my bed
they sing,
they dance
they stand
on their head.

They fill all the corners,
they swing from the lights,
they shout and cavort
all through the night.

They fill up my notebooks
cause my pens to leak;
they cackle, they howl,
they even squeak.

I awake
in the morning,
it's just as I feared
the words have run off.
They've all disappeared.

So how can I write
with words gone away?
All my words want to do
is sleep through the day.

If your words could talk to you, what would they say?  Can you write a poem today that is a letter to yourself?  Have fun writing.

  1. Thanks Carol. I just had fun thinking about all those words I could write having fun playing after I go to sleep. What do your words do when you're not there?

  2. Too cute, love it.

What at my words doing when I go to sleep

They swing from the ceiling, they prace across the floor
They crawl up the walls and slide across the door

They weave thru my hair and tie it in knots,
they paint my face with line and poka dots

AS I awake they scramper away and hide in the pages of books put away. Love you Lady!! Happy happy!

  3. Perhaps you could play hide-and-seek with your words. This is oh so fun! Thanks for the humor!

    1. Gosh, and I was thinking the words could play badminton or bowling. Great suggestion.
