Progressive Poem

WHAT IS POETRY?

“Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.”
Leonardo da Vinci

What is poetry?
It is finding the truth, no need to lie.
It's munching on watermelon and letting seeds fly.

It's a letter that come with a card in the mail.
It's the lacy silver threads left by a garden snail.

Yesterday my buddy Amy VanDerwater at Poetry Farm started the 2013 Progressive Poem with this line:

When you listen to your footsteps  (Amy VanDerwater)
the words become music and (Joy Acey)

So there you go, Matt Forrest Esenwine , the next line is yours to create.

  1. I love to "Let seeds fly!" And now words become music... Where will they lead?
I am posting a different form each day using the alphabet. Today is the blues. My cat makes music in an annoying way. http://reflectionsontheteche.wordpress.com

    1. Margaret,
I'm enjoying your Poetry Month challenge for yourself. Your acrostic on BLUEBONNET was excellent and your bluesy cat is amazing. I'm enjoying your posts. Awesome.

    1. Thanks, Ruth.
I'm with you on the suspense. I feel like a little kid with a box of chocolates--I want them all at once. This is almost better than Christmas. Isn't poetry's ability to create feeling amazing?

  4. Love the 'lacy silver threads', & the next line, another path already! Terrific!

  5. Yes to music and lacy silver snail threads! And yes to the best poetry has to offer: surprise and understanding. I was tickled by munching on watermelon and flying seeds, too. It is an apt metaphor for me. So happy to be part of this experience this year. Thanks to Irene and all of the welcoming poets, teachers and writers in the Kidlitosphere.

    1. Penny,
Thank you so much. I really hesitated about calling the footsteps words and making it music. Yes, the whole process is magic to me. I can hardly wait to see what Matt adds tomorrow and the the rest of the poets. What a great community children's poets are.

    1. Laura,
I'm looking forward to reading your line later this month, and to seeing where the poem is going by then.
I also wanted to tell you that I've really been enjoying your recent video posts and the video poetry prompts. What fun for kids.

  10. Joy,
Thanks for putting in a plug for my blog post. How sweet!

Enjoy your progressive poetry writing. You make creating more fun than...

Finish the rest and you can't say "a barrel of monkeys."

    1. Oh Linda,
You have done it again. Just when I read a post today suggesting making a list of things that make me happy, now you're asking for a list of things that spur creativity. Definitely fun.
      More creative than
      painting a rainbow
      making fudge
finding a place for a safety pin.
I'm going to have to give this some more thought and then fashion it into a poem. Thank you for the inspiration.

  11. This will be quite a ride (in the forest)--buckle up!

  12. April,
You have peaked my curiosity and my interest. I can understand buckling up, but why have you put the poem in the forest? I'm out here in the desert.

    1. Duh? I feel so slow. It wasn't until today that I realized that you were referring to Matt Forrest. I HATE being the last person in the room to get a joke. That one flew right over my head. But didn't Matt do a lovely job adding his line?
