BUTTERFLY GARDEN

 Inside the butterfly garden
the butterflies are all astir.
 Their wings, they are flapping,
flying in a whir.
 Yellow, orange and blue ones,
dancing all about.
 Careful when you exit.
Do not let them out.
 Watch them stop to rest,
dull underside of wing.
 Filled with graceful magic
the butterfly garden brings.

Have you ever hatched a butterfly?  Have you watched one fly?  Have you visited a butterfly garden?
Can you write your own butterfly poem today?

PILLOWS, PILLOWS, PILLOWS

What a lovely sight!
Pillows, pillows, pillows
on my left
and my right.
Pink, blue, yellow,
brown, green, white.
I have an idea,
let's have a pillow fight
and we don't even have
to wait
for tonight.

Now, I've shown you this toon picture of pillows and presented my poem, but I also wanted to share a poem by my friend Marcia Diane.  (She is the person who introduced me to Pippin, the little black and white pony with beautiful blue eyes that I've pictured here earlier and wrote a poem for him.)  Her poem is about feelings, and I thought it would be a good one for discussing feelings.  Marcia, Thank you for sharing your poem with us.

SAD AND BLUE
by M. Diane

Did you ever hug a pillow

when you’re sad and blue?

Have you ever hugged a pillow

right up close to you?

Have you ever hugged a pillow

when your mom’s to busy to hug you

or your dad’s not around

and your brother’s acting like a clown?

Did you ever hug a pillow

up close to you?

It’s ever so lovely

a thing to do.

M. Diane

Your challenge for today is to write your own poem about a feeling you've had, or you can write about your own pillow and how it makes you feel.  Have fun.

POETRY FRIDAY is hosted over at Keri's today.  Head over there if you'd like to read more children's poetry.   Keri, thank you for hosting us.

HAPPY FLAG DAY

The wind blows.
The metal chain
clanks against
the flag pole
and at the top
the colors unfurl
red, white and blue.
Our flag
stands for one nation,
our states
united in liberty,
freedom, truth,
justice.  The flag
of these United States
has a long history.
Each time I see
our flag waving
I think of
more than our flag.
Thanks to you
for helping
to keep
our country free.

What do you think of when you see a flag?  Fireworks, baseball games, parades?  Can you write your own "flag" poem today?

Your Eyes

Daddy says
my eyes
are like melted chocolate
like ground cinnamon
like steaming pots of chili
like the soft brown of deer eyes.

He says my eyes
are deep and mysterious
like his and mama's
dark eyes.

So why do I love
your blue eyes?
Blue like clear skies
like a swimming pool
a lake, an ocean.

Deep blue like sapphires,
your eyes sparkle
they shine like dew
on Texas bluebonnets
that bloom in waves for spring.

I love your blue eyes;
they take me away
to distant places.
I wish they were mine.

What color are your eyes?  Are they like your mom's or dad's eyes?  Think of all the wonderful things your eyes let you see.  Can you write a poem about eyes today?  Or, if you'd like, shut your eyes and then write a poem about the first thing you see when you open your eyes again.  Have fun.

Counting Balloons

Children in the park
with balloons
orange, blue, green.

How many balloons can be seen?
One, two, three, four, five, six,
seven, eight, nine, ten
eleven, twelve, thirteen
and fourteen.

Happy Saturday.  I've counted the balloons several times and come up with 14 each time, but maybe you'll see the picture differently.  What is your favorite color of balloon? Can you write a poem about that?

What's Your Story, Morning Glory

Blue Morning Glories
sway on their vine,
dance in the wind,
looking divine.

In the morning
droplets of dew
rest on their petals,
bluer than blue.

Turning their faces
toward the sun,
bright in the morning
then evening they're done.

Here is a quick challenge.  See how many different kinds of flowers you can name in a minute.  Make a list.  Now select one flower from your bouquet and write your poem about that flower today.  Have fun and if you'd like to share your poem, please leave it in the comments.
