Round

Round ball,
round orange,
round sphere,
what do you find?
I keep turning circles,
can't make up my mind.

   A round shape is one of the first shapes a young child learns.  Look around you.  What round shapes do you see?  Which one do you like the best?  Can you write your own poem about a shape?  Have fun writing.

haiku

peeling an orange
many layers and sections
citrus in my nails.

    Do you like to eat oranges?  Or do you avoid them because they can be hard to peel?  Have you ever had the oil squirt into your eye, or gotten rind under your fingernails?  Some times the things we have to work the hardest to get to taste the sweetest.  For today's challenge can you take one of your old poems and try revising it one more time to make your poem even sweeter.  Have fun writing.

BUTTERFLY GARDEN

 Inside the butterfly garden
the butterflies are all astir.

 Their wings, they are flapping,
flying in a whir.

 Yellow, orange and blue ones,
dancing all about.

 Careful when you exit.
Do not let them out.

 Watch them stop to rest,
dull underside of wing.

 Filled with graceful magic

the butterfly garden brings.

ORANGES

On this chilly morning
Red clouds
Arch the sky
Near citrus trees
Growing globes of fruit
Erupting in the 
Scent of sunshine


     Do you like the smell of oranges?  I do.  I couldn't think of what to write this morning and I was eating an orange.  I was going to write a haiku about oranges, but then I thought an acrostic would let me say more.  It is hard to write a short succinct
haiku that says everything you want it to.  So, here is your poetry challenge for today, can you write your own acrostic about a piece of fruit?  Can you use the letters to tell us something about the fruit, who eats it, or what it is used for or smells like?  Have fun writing your poem.

Navel Oranges

The oranges 
on my citrus tree
are big and round, 
bright and shiny.

I cut one open,
it tastes delicious.
I wish you were here
to try it with us.

    It does seem strange to me that as much of the US braces for a winter of snow, my little orange tree is just coming into its own.  We planted this tree two and a half years ago and it is finally bearing fruit.  Today's poetry challenge is to write a poem about your favorite fruit (or vegetable).

ORANGE

Toss me.
Furl me.
Spin me.
Twirl me.
Juggle me.
Dance.
Roll me
through the streets
looking for romance.
Strip me.
Peel me.
Eat my sections.
I'm a citrusy
orange confection.


     I couldn't think of anything to write about this morning and so I picked the first thing that came to hand--An orange.  And then ideas started to dance through my head.  Put your hand out.  Turn around and what is the first thing you can touch?
Can you write a poem about that?  Happy Saturday and have fun writing.

AMAZING CREATURE

The tarantula wasp
is a beautiful thing
with a black body
and bright orange wings.

The tarantula wasp
has one amazing feature,
it kills tarantulas--
what a lovely creature.

Eating corn candy

sweetness of autumn

  I'm still doing haiku.  I'm not sure if I should switch the first and third lines on this one, what do you think? Does this one work?   Now it's your turn, today can you write a poem about the candy you're hoping to get for Halloween?  Have fun writing. 

Counting Balloons

Children in the park

with balloons

orange, blue, green.

How many balloons can be seen?

One, two, three, four, five, six,

seven, eight, nine, ten

eleven, twelve, thirteen

and fourteen.

      Happy Saturday.  I've counted the balloons several times and come up with 14 each time, but maybe you'll see the picture differently.  What is your favorite color of balloon? Can you write a poem about that?

More Fruit

Please

eat 

all the

ripe fruit,

soon.

Oranges are juicy.

Oranges are sweet.

Remove the peel

before you eat.


     I'm still going crazy over fruit.  I'm thinking mangoes, pineapples, papaya, cantaloupe,  watermelon, and bananas.  What is your favorite fruit?  I wonder if you help the fruit to your ear, what story would you hear?  Can you find a poem to write somewhere in all this good fruit?  Happy Friday.
