SO MUCH YELLOW

Paloverde Tree

Goldfinch hide
in the Paloverde tree,
so much yellow
they are hard to see.

The Foothills or Yellow Paloverde trees (Cercidium microphyllum, a member of the pea family) are blooming right now (From April to May.) All the hillsides are covered with the bright yellow blossoms.  The trees grow up to 25 feet high and have smooth green bark which is photosynthetic.  Their leaflets are tiny, little things grown bipinnately in clusters to help in preventing water loss. This morning I saw a bird perched in my Paloverde and it took me a moment or two to identify it.  Actually, I didn't identify the bird until it flew away because the golden feathers of the bird blended with the tree.

Do you have blooming trees where you live?  Can you try writing a tree or a bird poem today?  Have fun writing.

BUTTERFLY GARDEN

 Inside the butterfly garden
the butterflies are all astir.
 Their wings, they are flapping,
flying in a whir.
 Yellow, orange and blue ones,
dancing all about.
 Careful when you exit.
Do not let them out.
 Watch them stop to rest,
dull underside of wing.
 Filled with graceful magic
the butterfly garden brings.

Have you ever hatched a butterfly?  Have you watched one fly?  Have you visited a butterfly garden?
Can you write your own butterfly poem today?

YELLOW SQUASH

Yellow Squash,
Yellow Squash,
What can you be?
I am a vegetable
to go with your turkey.

I've been working on some poems with color words lately.  This is one of the seasonal poems. Can you try writing a poem about your favorite color today?  Have fun writing and exploring colors.  For a fun twist what happens if you mix up the colors, so you have a green sun, a blue elephant, a red banana?  What is the craziest mix-up you can think of?

SUNFLOWERS

Fields upon fields
of sunflowers bright.
Rows upon rows
of yellow light.
Stretching
toward the bright sun,
Vincent Van Gogh's delight.

What is your favorite kind of flower?  Can you write a poem about that today.  How do you think you'd feel if you were a bee and came upon a whole field of sunflowers?  Have fun writing.

The Poetry Friday Roundup is being hosted by Betsy at http://ithinkinpoems.blogspot.it/2013/08/poetry-friday-is-here.html today Thanks, Betsy for a great party!

BARREL CACTUS

Barrel Cactus, Joy Acey, Aug. 2013

In the desert it's raining.
The thunder BOOMS.
But in the morning
the barrel cactus blooms.

The flowers are glossy ,
yellow and red,
so I'm happy if I see
a thunder head.

Most of the time the barrel cacti are just big lumps of spines.  Some have pretty yellow spines, like on golden barrel cacti.  But when we have monsoon rains every plant and animal feels like it better reproduce fast or they will miss their window of opportunity.  What is blooming around you?  Can you write a poem describing a plant you know?  Have fun thinking about all the things you know about the plant.
Does your plant have a name?  Enjoy writing your poem.

Riding to School

Meet me on our yellow school bus.
We can take a ride.
We will look for seats together
sitting side by side.

If you rode a school bus today, who would you want to be sitting in the seat next to you?  Can you write a poem about that?  Have fun.

haiku

Eating corn candy
orange and yellow leaves fall
sweetness of autumn

I'm still doing haiku.  I'm not sure if I should switch the first and third lines on this one, what do you think? Does this one work?   Now it's your turn, today can you write a poem about the candy you're hoping to get for Halloween?  Have fun writing.
