MONSTER DWIGHT

Monster Dwight,
his head is a light.
Some folks claim
he's not too bright.
When they tease him,
they say he's dim.
He doesn't let
it bother him,
he just turns up his light.
In a power outage
then you'll see
that his light
is so handy.

I'm still having fun with monster poems.  Now I need to go draw a picture to go with my poem.  Have a great Monday.  What are you doing today?  Is there a summer camp you are going to?

MONSTER FRED

My monster Fred
has a clipboard
for his head.

He jots down
memories
makes lists, doodles,
draws figures and rings,
because his brain
is not too good
for remembering things.

I enjoy writing monster poems.  I have fun mixing things up to make a monster.
Can you make your own monster poem today?  Close your eyes, turn your head.  Now open your eyes.  What is the first thing you see?  Can you make that part of your monster?  Have fun writing a monster poem.

THERE IS A MONSTER

There Is A Monster

There is a monster
all in red
with a great
hairy head.
He is hiding. He is hiding
under my bed.

There is a monster
with sharp yellow teeth
and I see him underneath.
He is hiding. He is hiding
under my dresser.

A mean orange monster
with big floppy ears,
his cheeks are damp
with great big tears.
He is hiding. He is hiding
in my closet.

There is a monster
with a green scaly tail.
He quivers and shakes
to no avail.
He is hiding. He is hiding
in the toy chest.

There is a monster
with a purple furry neck.
He doesn't like me
even a speck.
He is hiding. He is hiding
on the shelf.

There is a monster
with blue eyes.
He wants to wear
a good disguise.
He is hiding. He is hiding
in the trash can.

There is a brown monster
who is a strange fellow.
He is hiding. He is hiding
under my pillow.

There is a monster
with shiny black horns
he is shy and bashful
and all forlorn.
He is hiding. He is hiding
behind the hamper that is full.

All these monsters
I can see.
I wonder what
it can be.
Why are they all
such big scaredies?
They are hiding. They are hiding
away from me.

I love the idea of furry monsters.  My imagination congers all sorts of interesting creatures.  Do you like monsters too?  OK, so let's try writing a poem about a monster today.  What does your monster look like?  What does your monster do?  Does it make your bed, do your homework, wash your hair?  Remember to use your five senses.  What does it smell like?  What does it eat?
Have fun writing your monster poem.  Please share with me in the comments below.  Have fun.

Thank You Esperanza Elementary Poets

Yesterday I visited with fine young poets from Esperanza Elementary School in Phoenix AZ.  This is a picture of the Princess of Poetry with their teacher Ken Slesarik.  We had a grand time learning former children's poet laureate Jack Prelutsky's poem EYEBALLS FOR SALE  from his book Pizza the Size of the Sun.  We made up our own manticores (a mythical beast with the head of a lion, the body of a human and the tail of a dragon or scorpion) and then wrote poems about them.
With the children's help I made a beaversaurus with the head of a beaver, the body of a boy, legs of a horse and the tail of a dinosaur.  We decided to call it a beaversaures and called it Mr. S. after their teacher.

So here is my lame picture of the beaversaures.

MY MANTICORE

Mr. S is my beaversaures.
He likes singing
in the school chorus.
He sings high.
He sings low.
He sings poems
where ever he goes.

(More verses to follow.)

Have fun making your own manticore and writing a poem about it.  You can use your five senses to find things to tell about your creature.
