WAITING FOR SPRING

A little girl
ready for spring
wants to fly kites
and hear birds sing.

A little girl
ready for spring
wants to have picnics.
What should she bring?

A little girl
ready for spring
in her spring dress
she's ready to swing.

I'm ready for spring too.  The Tucson Festival of Books is this weekend
and I'm all set with my Poetry Friday Anthology for Middle School t-shirt.
I feel so honored to have one of my poems included with the other 109 poems.
Wow!  Lots of great verses from 70 other poets.  Thank you, Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong, editors of this great anthology.
This is my friend Oscar, an ostrich.  Can you write a poem for him today?

Poetry Friday Roundup is hosted by Heidi Mordhorst at My Juicy Little Universe.  Thanks, Heidi and Happy Birthday.

  1. Oh, I what a lovely little girl! Her face and her poem are both so sweet, Joy. And I completely relate as spring is trying to peek through here in Western New York. What a cute shirt - and ostrich too! Your post today made me just smile. Thank you. Happy Poetry Friday! xo, a.

    1. Amy,
You have become a dear poetry sister to me. Thank you. I had a lot of fun making that little girl. Robyn Hood Black and Tabatha Yeatts inspire me to play with art. HAPPY POETRY FRIDAY to everyone.

    1. Oh, I'm so sorry about the snow, Matt. But, as my old writing buddy Bill Hooks used to say, "Great weather for writing."
We are having a little rain today, but it is supposed to clear up before the Tucson Festival for Books tomorrow. Plus, the sun is shining, so somewhere there should be rainbows.
      Good Luck in finding yours.

    1. Jama,
Thank you. I worked really hard to be included in the new Poetry Friday Anthology for Middle School. I just feel so fortunate to be included with so many really GREAT children's poets. There are 100 poems by 71 poets in the book. It is a beautiful book.

  8. Congratulations on the anthology. This little girl is ready for spring, too.
    Oscar is an ostrich
    taller than me
When I give him a hug,
    he doesn't try to flee.
(Can you finish it for me?)

    Happy Friday!

    1. Oh Margaret,
What fun. Yes, I'll give this a go, but I might bring in Oscar's friend Felix, the flute playing frog who lives in the backyard. (And that is going to take another picture.) I'll get right on this.

  12. Hi there Joy! Congratulations on having your poem be part of such an important and bound-to-be-really-beautiful anthology of poems. As we live in a tropical country, we have the sun the whole year round. Here's wishing you a taste of spring, a drop of sunshine, and lots of greens from sunny Singapore.

  13. Hi, Joy--

I love your little collage girl too--reminiscent of Madeline yet all her own girl. I'm very ready to have some Spring for Monday--and if the weathertellers are right it will be warmer at least! It's nice how the poem asks us to pack the picnic along with her.
