MY FRIEND

I have a friend
who plays with me.
He comes on sunny days.

But if the skies
are gray or dark
my friend will stay away.

I think he is
attached to me.
He's stuck on to my feet.

He doesn't venture
far away. He hides
beneath my seat.

Sometimes I see him
on the wall, and when
I move my arms.

He turns into animals
the kinds you find
on farms.

Can you guess
who my friend is,
he doesn't wear a halo?

He's dark and black,
and looks like me
because he is my shadow.

When was the last time you looked at your shadow?  Did you play games with your shadow?  Can you try writing your own riddle poem or one about your shadow?  Have fun writing.

Children's poets nab the best words.

FIVE SNAKES

Five snakes went out
for a slither
one night.

The air was cool,
the moon
was bright.

Each snake saw
his shadow.
It gave him
a scare.

They all raced home
to sleep
in their lair.

Now that the weather is getting a little cooler, the snakes in my neighborhood are more active.  They still are most active at night when the hawks aren't out.
My newspaper says there is will be a lunar eclipse tonight at 3:25 AM, Wednesday morning.  I'm going to set my alarm clock to get up and watch the eclipse.  I'll also look to see if I can see my own shadow.  Can you write your own poem about the moon today? Have fun writing.

Song Dog, Canis latrans

The moon shines silver
in slivery light.
Saguaro shadows
are dark this night.

When out in the scrub
the wind whispers
a trilling refrain,
that echos
       and echos
            repeating again.

Yee, Yee, Yee,
Yip, yip, yip, yip,yip,yip.
Coyotes are tracking tonight.

SPRING

Spring is coming.
What a thrill.
Nary a shadow
for Punxsutawney Phil.

This was the headline from yesterday:

Groundhog Day 2013: 'Punxsutawney Phil' Predicts Early Spring

I hope you are ready for an early spring.  I certainly am.  How about writing a poem about spring today.

CHRISTMAS EVE

On Christmas eve,
you search the sky
hoping to see
Santa drive by.

Then with a jingle
across the moon,
you see his shadow
and hear him croon,
"Merry Christmas
to all,
and to all
a Good Night."

Halloween Haiku

October's full moon
scarey Halloween shadows
shake on pumpkin vines

Can you try writing your own haiku today?  Have fun.

SHADOW

In the morning
I feel fine
I see my shadow
it's a friend of mine.

In the morning when
my shadow
is seen,
to me
it looks
long
and
lean.

I think
my shadow
is pretty sweet,
because
it is attached
to my feet.

When clouds come
my shadow runs away
then we can
no longer play.

Have you ever played with shadow puppets?  Can you write  a poem today about shadows?  Do have fun.

* FREE * FREE * FREE *

On Friday I'll announce how you can win a free copy of DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE Poems for an Election Year, a poetry collection written by Janet Wong.

Here is my poem for today--
Free

Blessed by the moonlight
and sparkling stars all around.
Blessed by the sun
that casts my shadow
on the ground.

Blessed by my fore fathers
who traveled over sea.
They fought for  liberty
so I am free to be me.

For your poem challenge today, can you write a list poem of all the things or people  that bless your life?  Have fun writing.

Daylight Moon

It is 2:00
and the moon is out.
I wonder what
the moon sees.

It is so strange
with daylight about
to think of the moon
looking at me.

The moon may cast shadows,
but those I can not see
for the sun is still shining brightly,
as bright as it can be.

Today's poem is a little different because I wanted to share a photo of the moon that was out at 2 o'clock.  Has the moon been out early at your place too?  Today's poem challenge is to write a poem about the sun or moon.  One is thought of as being full of brightness, the other dark.  Do you think they would like to change places?  Have you ever wanted to change places with someone?  Did you discover that your own life was pretty good.  Have a good day.
