BUTTERFLY WALK

Joy Acey 2015

Today I took a walk
with a butterfly
and every step I took
it would flutter by.

Glad for the company
as I walked along the road.
That butterfly, he helped me,
by lightening my load.

I don't know why, but watching nature always makes me feel happy, fanciful.  It lightens my spirit.  Is there something in your life that always makes you feel good?  Can you try writing a poem today bout things that make you happy?  Have fun writing.

Today I'll keep a smile on my face, because the world is a marvellous place.

MY DOG

I took my dog
for a walk.
All he wanted
was to talk, talk, talk.

First he'd yip.
Then he'd yap.
I took him home
for a nap.

I got a headache,
yes, of course.
Next time I'll wish
my dog was hoarse.

Hey, it is  National Walk Your Dog Week, October 1-7.  That is one long walk.  Do you take your dog for walks?  Where have you gone this week?  What would your dog say to you if he could talk? What do you talk to your dog about?  What would the dogs say if they could have a dog chat?  No matter if you have a dog or not, (you can always imagine one), try writing a poem about a dog today.  Have fun.

Like vitamin pills, everyone should day dream at least once a day.  Enjoy your dreams.

I'm taking a poetry course at Wordpress's Blogging University.  If you'd like to read an abecedarian I wrote for today's assignment go here,    https://joyacey.wordpress.com/?p=436&preview=true&preview_id=436

Do the Zombie Dance

Zombies rise from their graves.
They stroll in your nightmares.
They do a stiff-leg robot walk
which gives us all a scare.
Boo-ooo-ooo!

Happy Poetry Friday.  I'm still working on poems from my Halloween word list.  Can you try writing your own zombie poem today?  What if your BFF (best friend forever) was a zombie?  Do zombies go to school?  Could your teacher be a zombie?  Have fun writing your poem.

Today's Poetry Friday Roundup is hosted by Patricia Stohr-Hunt at her blog The Miss Rumphius Effect.  Just hop over there for lots more poetry fun.  Thanks for hosting us.

My, Oh My, Oh My!

A bunny hops along the road,
a squirrel scuttles by,
a quail bobs to the other side.
My, oh my, oh my!

This is what I saw on my walk today.  Did you take a walk?  What did you see today?  Can you write a poem about it?  Have fun writing your poem.

MAY 9

A Lai

Bobbing the fence rail
are two feathered quail--
mistake.

Along that same trail
flicks his rattle-tail,
a snake.

His meal, it will fail
as up the birds sail--
heart-ache.

I thought for May 9, I'd try a couple of nine line poems.  The first is the French form, the lai.  This form uses two rhyme families.  A syllabic form, there are five syllables for the first two lines using one rhyme, followed by two syllable lines for the second rhyme.  So, the lines look like:

x x x x a
x x x x a
x b

x x x x a
x x x x a
x b

x x x x a
x x x x a
x b

It is fun working with the long and short lines, but it does make the poem list-like with that really short two syllable line.

Here's another:

Once you may recall
when we were still small
we'd play
at chasing a ball.
You'd try not to fall
each day
and sometimes we'd crawl
or we would stretch tall
in May.

Another nine line poem is the nonet.  The first line has nine syllables, the second eight, with each successive line having one less syllable until the ninth line has only one syllable.  This takes some planning because you have to end on a single syllable word.   I'm working on a nonet for tomorrow.

But May 10th is Astronomy Day, so I might write about the moon.  And it is also National Public Gardens Day, so I might make my poem about the garden.  What will you write about today?  Can you try writing a lai or a nonet?  Have fun writing.

The Poetry Friday Round Up is hosted by Jama Rattigan on her blog Alphabet Soup.  Head over to Jama's Alphabet Soup to read more poetry today.  Thank you, Jama for hosting a fun party.

Morning Walk

I paused this morning
on my walk
To stand and listen
to the small birds talk.

Perched high up
in the Paloverde tree
they called to each other
too-whit, too-whee.

Their calling song
made me smile
and helped me walk
an extra mile.

It is Sunday and it is Vida de Loca day in Tucson.  This is like a big community picnic, where lots of local restaurants have booths to sell ethnic foods.  Early this morning there was a farmers market to sell local produce.  And of course there is music and dancing.  Can you write a picnic poem today?  What fun things happen at your picnics?  Have fun writing.

Walk Along the Beach

Walk along the beach,
feel sand between your toes,
watch a fiery sunset,
see the world turn to rose.

Smell plumeria scent
from a Hawaiian lei.
Learn to live aloha,
take the time to play.

I'm obviously still thinking about leis.  I talked to some people in Minnesota that had snow this morning.  So I thought I'd send you some sunshine and flowers.  Enjoy today.

Road Find

Along the road,
on my walk today,
I picked up a nail,
and took it away.

Nothing special--
a stiff wire.
Thought it might cause
a flat tire.

Today is a great day to take a walk.  Where will you walk to?  Use all your senses, (well, maybe not taste) to observe along your walk.  As soon as you get home write what you saw, smelled, heard, and felt.  Can you make this into a poem?  Perhaps a haiku or a fib?  Have fun.

DESERT WALK

Taking a walk
in the desert with you
I see things differently--
a new kind of true.

The quail scurry
the rabbit hops
I don't want this walk
to ever stop.

The birds are singing
a happy tune,
I look up to see
a daylight moon.

The sky seems even
bluer than blue
when I take a walk
in the dessert with you.

Take a walk today and try writing a poem about the things you see, smell, hear and feel.  Have fun writing.

Bye Bye Balloons

At the end of the day
they put away
the party decorations.

After the bash
balloons went in the trash--
the end of the celebration.

I saw these balloons on my morning walk.  Your challenge today is to take a walk and write a poem about something you see on your walk.  Have fun.

Quiet Monday

quiet, clear morning
a coyote out walking
crosses before me

I wrote a haiku today about my morning walk.  I always appreciate when I see animals out on my walks.  It helps to remind me that there is more to this world than you and me.  It makes me wonder what happens when there are no longer coyotes to see, or jack rabbits and squirrels.
Are you getting ready for Thanksgiving holiday?  What is your favorite thing to eat for Thanksgiving dinner?  Can you write a poem about that today?  Does anyone know about salsify?  The book I'm reading says it is a root vegetable also known by the name oyster plant.  I don't think I've ever tasted this plant, so I'm going to see if I can find some.  Isn't life fun when it comes with new experiences?  I hope you have lots of new experiences today.  Enjoy.

My Rock

On my walk
I kicked a rock.
Flip-flop.
I liked the sound,
kicked it again--
harder this time.
Flip-flop, rip-rop.
One more time,
Flip-flop, rip-rop,
rumbly, tumbly
rippity,rop.
and then my rock
stopped,
at the side of the road
in another pile of rocks.
Couldn't tell
which rock
was my rock.
No more
flip-flop, rip-rop,
rumbly, tumbly
rippity,rop.
So long rock
as I continue
on my walk.

I do like rocks, but I usually focus on how they look and feel.  This morning I kicked the rock and liked the game I started.  David Harrison has a poem about using a rock for a laser rocket gun.  Have you played a game with a rock?  Have you tried building with rocks?  So today try writing a poem about a rock.  Have fun.

What did you see?

What did you see on your walk today?
Oh, what did you see, my dear?

I saw a dead snake in the road
so dead it was nothing to fear.

A Phainopepla sitting in a tree
and a cardinal singing to me.

I saw a hummingbird fine
sitting on a telephone line.

And there, too close, were two coyotes
who stood and just stared at me.

I mustn't forget the cotton tails
and the bobbing heads of desert quails.

Of course there was a cactus wren
who sat and called again and again.

This and that and so much more
were all out walking with me.

This is what I saw on my walk today, dear.
This is what I saw on my walk.

It was a lovely day today and yes I had a great walk.  It is definitely getting close to Spring, there was a scorpion in the bathroom this morning that I had to get rid of before my shower.  Today's poem is a list poem.  It lists the things I saw on my morning walk.  Can you take a walk today and write your own list poem?  Don't worry about making it rhyme.  Add some details that tell what the thing on your list is doing.
Please share your poem in the comments.  Have a great day.
