THE CROCODILE

Knocking at my door
was a crocodile.
He opened his mouth
to a toothy smile.

I was scared.
Thought I'd be dead.

Tick-or-treat,
was what
the crocodile said.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

I had so much fun making the illustration for the poem today.  One nice thing about the quiet time of drawing is that it lets my mind work on the poem some more.  Can you see how this poem could be done in two voices?  Or the children could say the "Trick-or-treat" while the adult recites the rest of the poem.
Now using this pattern with the same opening line "Knocking at my door" you could use other animals.  I tried a bear next.

Knocking at my door
was a grizzly bear.
He had big teeth
and smelly hair.

And the rest of the poem stays the same.
Or, a flamingo.

Knocking at my door
was a flamingo.
She had long legs
to go, go, go.

She was so pink,
almost red.

Trick-or-treat,
was what
the flamingo said.

I think I could go on with many more animals.  I'm going to try.  So, your challenge for today is to write your own poem about what is knocking at your door.  Have fun thinking of the possibilities.  Happy Poetry Friday.
The Poetry Roundup is over at Live Your Poem.  Thank you Irene Latham for hosting us today.

  2. I love your picture! I haven't thought about what sketching might add to my poem writing. I may just try it. I am going to this on this and see what I can write.
Thanks for sharing your poem and encouraging me to write.

    1. Oh, Tricia,
You've made my day. I LOVE encouraging people to write poetry. And, yes, try adding little drawings to your poems. It is so much fun and the drawing time lets my mind work on poetry. Please share your poem.
      Yes, write, write, write.

    1. Thanks for playing Matt. Well done, I'd turn too if I saw an alligator at my door.
Will the little dude wear a costume for Halloween? What is he planning?

    1. Hey, Linda.
Run faster. Are the ideas confusing? Just wait till you see what I do with this Halloween rhyme tomorrow on Saturday. The next chore is to bust it out from Halloween and make the rhyme fit other holidays.

    1. Thanks Mary Lee. I've been thinking the same thing. I'm certainly having fun playing with this. Check out my posts for the next few days and see other variations on this rhyme. I'm having fun. I hope poetry brings you pleasure too.

  6. Joy,
Thanks for not making the title about Trick-or-Treat. This way, I was unprepared for what the crocodile might say or do. Adds tension. What if the title were "A Crocodile at My Door." It might grab more readers' attention.

    1. You're correct about not using Halloween or Trick-or-treat in the title. It would give it away.
But, check out Saturday's post to see some other ideas.
Maybe you'd like to try writing one.

    1. Myra,
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. It looks like I'm going to be posting Halloween poems for the next week. I'm having so much fun. My sister said to me, "You really like Halloween more than Christmas. At least it seems like you have more to write about." It was an interesting thought and I'm thinking on it. Which holiday speaks through you more?
