I love
sugary cotton candy
spun into a pink cloud,
writing children's poetry
to be whispered aloud.
watching yellow butterflies
as they flit flying by
comforting a baby
when she's starting to cry.
grass on summer mornings
glistening in dew,
and the feeling I get
when I think of you.
This is a list poem. Can you try writing your own list poem today? It doesn't have to rhyme. Just start by writing a list--things you love or hate, books you've read, movies you've seen, places you've visited, foods you like, etc. Then try to shape your list into a poem. Have fun. Happy Sunday.
Just like there are all kinds of people, there are all kinds of poems. Each one is special.
Welcome
This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

I'M HAPPY
copyright 2014, Joy Acey |
There's moon glow inside me.
I'm dancing on air.
Where are my friends?
Will you join me there?
In My Daily Post today, Ben Huberman included a quote from Allen Ginsberg, "Follow your inner moonlight, don't hide the madness."
I loved the idea of having moonlight inside my body and so I wrote this poem. But then I got to thinking about other things that make me happy, that symbolize happiness to me.
There's cotton candy inside me.
I'm feeling so sweet.
I smile,
say HELLO,
to each friend I meet.
There's bubbles inside me.
I'm feeling so light.
My feet, they are dancing.
I feel their delight.
There's a circus inside me.
I feel like the show.
There are lions and tigers
to dance where I go.
OK. So now it is your turn. What are some things that make you happy? Chocolate, swimming, sunshine, parties? How would it make you feel?
So try the format and see what you come up with:
There's a _____________________________ inside me.
I feel like____________________________________.

PINK CLOUDS
A spun sugary treat,
I'm a dandy.
I melt in your mouth.
I am __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __.
What is your favorite candy? Can you write a poem about that today. Or how about writing an acrostic poem using your favorite candy. Oh what fun. I'm off to try it. I hope you have fun writing today.

Define Happy
Happy as a
peanut,
an acorn,
a hummingbird,
a grain of sugar
joined with others
spun in heat
to become
cotton candy.
I can't think
of anything happier
than a paper cone
filled with candy floss.
Your poetry challenge for today is to craft your own definition. Select a word and then write your list poem. Have fun writing.

Tuesday's Treat
PROGRESSIVE POEM Each day during the month of April I will add a line to this poem.
WHAT IS POETRY?
To have great poets there must be great audiences too. --Walt Whitman
To have great poets there must be great audiences too. --Walt Whitman
It is finding the truth, no need to lie.
It's munching on watermelon and letting seeds fly.
It's a letter that comes with a card in the mail.
It's the lacy silver threads left by a garden snail.
It's daffodil trumpets covering the hill.
It's a deer at the creek, drinking her fill.
It's giggling and laughing and being absurd.
It's reading a haiku and feeling each word.
It's a dragon who blows flames, loud and hardy.
It's fairies in the garden having a tea party.
It's the sound of a truck shifting its gears.
It's the feel of two soft puppy dog ears.
It's a bright sun rise and glowing moon shine.
It's a Carolina wren singing in a Lob-lolly pine.
It's a snowman rolled on a cold winter morn.
It's crows calling from tall tasseled corn.
It's the whisper of hummingbird wings in the air.
It's fairies in the garden having a tea party.
It's the sound of a truck shifting its gears.
It's the feel of two soft puppy dog ears.

It's a Carolina wren singing in a Lob-lolly pine.
It's a snowman rolled on a cold winter morn.
It's crows calling from tall tasseled corn.
It's the whisper of hummingbird wings in the air.
It's plaits and curls tied with bows in my hair.
It's spying a bird feeding her young.
It's pink cotton candy that melts on your tongue.
