Fairy Wings
There are fairies in my garden,
and I even have the proof.
I stopped to pick a flower
and then I heard a p o o f.
There beneath the flower--
the strangest of things,
a tiny, little fairy
had left her fairy wings.
If you find fairy wings in your garden, you get to make a wish. What would you wish for? Can you write a poem about wishes, or making a wish? Have fun writing.
You have the power to make this an amazing day.

END OF THE ROAD
Palm trees along the drive |
over the driveway.
Sun turns their trunks
to bones in bright white light.
Shadows make
lacy patterns
along the road.
Come journey
down the path
discover the hook
at the end.
Hear chickens
scurrying
in the bushes.
A rooster crows.
A surprise awaits
in the quiet calm
at the very end
find this poem.
Happy First Day of March. This is going to be a great month. I have so many friends who have birthdays in March.
The first week in March is National Write a Letter of Appreciation Day. What things do you appreciate? What people do you appreciate? What are you grateful for?
Two,
Four,
Six,
Eight,
Who do I appreciate?
You, you, you.
Oh, yes, I do.
Can you try writing your own appreciation poem today?
Thank you for reading my blog. You mean the world to me.
Happy poetry.
One day you will know this: when you work at a poem, all the heavens and their hosts bend close, rejoicing that another human has found the workplace and pathway of the poem. Sandford Lyne

CHICKEN SONG
The chickens all love
my poetry.
They like to sing
it back to me.
Cock-a-doodle-doo,
cock-a-doodle-doo,
chickens singing
poetry too.
Do you have pets? Do you ever practice saying your poems to them? Try writing a nonsense poem today about your pet. Have fun writing.
Sometimes the words get caught in my throat.

Happy Friday
POETRY PAINTBOX
Take out your poetry paintbox
to paint me a picture
of a tropical isle
where the chickens all sing.
In water colors wonderful
show me the waves crest
in white foaming churn
for a shore racing dance
that goes zing.
Poise with your paintbrush
in warm sunny colors
to paint palm trees,
their leaves folding
for prayer from a breeze
on this beautiful day.
This is a free verse poem that uses alliteration, assonance and some internal rhyme.
I have moved to the Island of Kauai. Each day I am a little more settled. I still have lots of boxes to unpack but my house actually is starting to feel like home. I do still wake up feeling like I'm on vacation and I have a hard time believing I'm living this wonderful life.
What are some things you like about your life? What are you grateful for? If you took out your own poetry paintbox, what words would you use to paint me a picture? Your poetry challenge for today is to write a poem picture of something you like about your life. Have fun stretching with this one.

WEATHER
Some days are cloudy.
Some days are hot.
Some days are rainy.
Some days are not.
Some days have rainbows.
Some days wind blows.
Some days are cold.
Some days it snows.
What ever the weather
Can we get together?
What is the weather like in your part of the world? My niece lives in Sydney, Australia, so she is having late fall weather. It will soon be winter there. My friend lives in Colorado and they had snow two weeks ago. I'm in Tucson and we're having hot, hot sunny weather. All over the world the weather is different. Your challenge for today is to write a poem about what the weather is like outside your window. Have a great day enjoying your writing and your weather.
Normally, I do NOT start every line of a poem with a capital letter. In this poem I chose to do that. Can you guess why I started every line with a capital in this poem?

THE SNAKE
One foot,
two feet,
the snake
has no feet.
He can only
slip and slide
over the ground
in a quick glide.
Oh, pity the snake
he has not feet
to set a beat
for poetry.
It is your free choice what to write today. Write the poem you have always wanted to write. Write for fun. Write to tell a story. Write about something you learned. Just have fun writing. Enjoy your creation.

New Friends
I have found
the more kids I've seen,
few of them
are intentionally mean.
When I treat people
kind and nice
they return the favor
more than twice.
Most folks are friendly
and show they care.
They help me out
and are more than fair.
I first wrote the last line of this poem as: with knowledge to share. That felt too limiting--people share more than their knowledge. I'm not finished with this poem. It is still very rough, but I does capture the idea I had in mind when I started writing.
Have you noticed on days whenyou are happy and smile at other people, those folks smile back and are happy too? Have you ever noticed if you do a good deed like open a door, or pick up trash in the lunch room, soon there are other people doing good deeds too. I find the goodness I launch into the world comes back to me multiplied. I feel good when I do good deeds and that goodness radiated and multiplies. Take a moment to think about a good deed you can perform today. Now, can you write your own poem about that? Do have fun. Have a happy day.

FLOATING ON THE RIVER
A river named Poetry
flows through my dreams
with cascading mists
dancing in moonbeams.
The cool taste of words
delights in my ear
as I'm drifting in poems
full of good cheer.
I wade with my Wellies
and grab some smooth stones,
for as long as there's poetry
I've no need to roam.
Exotic destinations are all
found in verse.
Addicted to rhyming,
oh, that is my curse.
flows through my dreams
with cascading mists
dancing in moonbeams.

STORM
The winds blew,
the lightning flashed,
the rains came down
and the thunder crashed.
Oh what a lovely storm.
Our monsoon rains are coming and it is so lovely to have a break from the heat. Can you write a poem today about some aspect of the weather? Perhaps you can use the weather for a metaphor for your relationship with some one you know. Have fun writing.
The Poetry Friday roundup is hosted this week by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong over at http://poetryforchildren.blogspot.com/ Thanks to the greatest editors ever. I appreciate your hard work in bringing poetry to children and teachers.

OPEN THE DOOR
Open the door.
Come on in.
The fun is about
to begin.
On the other side
is opportunity.
You get to decide
what that will be.
Now is a great time to think about what you want on the other side of that door. What doors would you like to work at opening this year? The choices are all up to you. Have fun thinking about what you'd like to see, and then try writing your own poem about the opportunities that are waiting for you. Enjoy!

SHADORMA
I'm still not back in gear. I've been trying to get my desk cleared today so I can get down to some serious work.So while I was cleaning I saw a note about the SHADORMA, a six line poems, that may have originated in Spain. This is a syllabic form with three syllables in the first line
five in the second, then three, three, seven syllables in the fifth line, and ending with five syllables in the last line.
Or, 1= XXX
2= XXXXX
3= XXX
4= XXX
5= XXXXXXX
6= XXXXX

WINK-WINK
A wink
is a blink
of one
eye.
If you follow my blog, you'll know that I've been playing with my art supplies this last week. One of the things I discovered is I have a fun time creating. Whether it is words that I've put together in a fun new way for me, or if it is art materials I've never tried before, doing something new is a challenge and I love the way it makes me feel. I can become so engrossed in my creation that I forget the time and sometimes even forget to eat.
What do you like to do to create? Your challenge for today is to write a poem about creating. I hope you have as much fun as I do.

LITTLE RHYMES
Here I stand
at the top of a hill.
My arms stretch out
to get my fill.
As I start
a little spin,
I let the magic
seep on in.
Turning round,
wild and free.
It feels like magic
poetry.
So stand on a hill,
a stool or chair.
Start to turn
while standing there.
Then let the magic
blow you away.
Pick up your paper
and pen today.
We'll laugh
and have funny times
when you write
some little rhymes.
So there is your challenge for today, written in verse. Write a little rhyme today. Try spinning first and see if that loosens up some great ideas and words for you.
Did you know that Rumi, a Persian poet, often recited his poems while spinning?
“We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust.” Rumi

WHAT IS POETRY?
Poetry is a radish
with green leafy top,
red cheeks
and a long white
goat beard.
It is Mom's
beaming red cheers
and Uncle's flushed
with booze.
It's the brothers
and sisters,
Grandma and Grandpa,
it's all the dead poets
standing in the doorway
to watch me write,
and it's the brown
earth worm moving
round and round
making room
for the radish
to breathe.
This is one of the weirdest poems I've ever written, but it's what has been going round and round in my head for the last few days. The "radish" came from a poem by Linda Baie. It was the last line of her poem and I guess I liked thinking about a radish. Can a radish be like a poem? Can a radish be like a person? So here is your challenge for today--pick a fruit or vegetable and use it as a simile or a metaphor for something else--a person, a favorite pet, poetry or your life. You've heard how people are described as pear shaped, now it is your turn to take it one step further. This can be fun, so give it a try and let me know what you come up with in the comments below. I hope you have a grand time writing (and thinking possibilities) today.
Oh, by the way, I had originally planned to make that cheers, another cheek, but I mis-typed. When I went back to check the poem for errors, I saw my mistake and I had to question which word I liked better. I decided on cheers, because Mom would always cheer me on and the cheeks is understood. Sometimes my subconscious knows what I should be doing before I do.

THE SAND
He discovered grains, definitely
an unlimited supply at the beach.
He brushed it from his feet
though it caught between toes
and around nails like a raspberry seed
between teeth, so he kept sanding.
Worried away Moro Bay, sunsets
birth, adolescence, graduation.
Kept trying to rid himself of the tiny
grains, an hourglass dropping time.
Unable to clear them all, he smoothed
the rough edges, like sandpaper.
This is a free verse poem. What images do you see in this poem? today can you write your own poem that develops an image? Have fun.

HAPPY HOLIDAY

Happy Holiday
On your sled
in the snow
you have a fun day.
I'm on my surfboard
on a wave,
all splash and spray.
Thought worlds apart
we both
have the same thing
to say,
We hope you have
a great
holiday.
Your challenge for today is to write a poem about what the weather is like in your part of the world and what you are doing today. Have fun.

My Favorite Food
On cold mornings
what I love most
is hot chocolate
with marshmallows
and
TOAST.
After building
my snowman
by the fire
I roast
drinking my hot chocolate
with marshmallows
and eating my
TOAST.
It's my favorite food
I should not boast
but I like my
hot chocolate
with marshmallows
and
TOAST.
What is your favorite food to eat on cold mornings? Do you like oatmeal or do you like to take your toast and make milk toast? Your challenge for today is to write a poem about your favorite food to eat on a cold morning, or on a hot day. Have fun writing.

Santa's Cat
Santa couldn't find his cat.
He wondered where she was at.
He looked in the kitchen
and under the stairs.
He looked in his workshop.
But the cat wasn't there.
He checked with the elves
and his reindeer,
they both said,
"We haven't seen her here."
Santa thought she'd run away
until he checked
inside his sleigh.
There with the cat,
Santa couldn't believe his eyes,
mewed eight little kittens--
a big surprise.
So if this Christmas eve
in your stocking you find
a sweet little kitten
from Santa's cat.
She doesn't mind.
Happy Monday. I'm going to Phoenix today to have some poetry fun with the students at Esperanza Music Academy. I hope you have a fun day too. for your poetry challenge today, can you write a poem about Santa's dog. It doesn't need to rhyme, but let me know what kind of dog he is. What does he look like? What does he like to eat? What does he do?
Have fun writing your poem.

Happy Holidays
All day I work for Santa
checking all his lists
of the gifts for children,
so no one will be missed.
Maureen wants dolly,
and Billy wants a bike.
Santa even knows
the gifts that you would like.
I hope you have been good
and work hard every day
so I can load your gifts
into Santa's sleigh.
I hope you have a good Sunday. I'm planning to go to a street fair today. Today I made a list of holiday words to use in helping me write my poems this month. For today's challenge can you make your own list? Let me know how many holiday words you come up with. Have fun.

The Elf
A happy elf
worked all year long
and as she worked
she sang this song:
"Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas,
I make toys
for good
girls and for boys."
All year long
she sang happily
making toys
for you and me.
Now she rests
on a shelf
glad to be
a hard working elf.
Happy Poetry Friday. What are you working on today? Can you write a poem about Santa's elves today?
Today's Poetry Roundup is hosted by Robyn Hood Black. Thanks for stopping by today. For more fun read all the poems I've posted this week. I have a video with Scarves, audio with two other poems this week.
