PUPPY LOVE

My neighbor's dogs
all furry puff balls
run and leap
with joy
when they see me.
Their greeting
a quick dance
filled with sunshine.
Who could not
feel love
to be greeted so?
They lift my spirits
to soar
like the hawks
circling above.

Do you have a dog?  Do your neighbors?  What dogs do you know?  Is there a dog in the book you are reading?  Can you write a poem today about a dog or cat.  This is a free verse poem.  Can you write a poem today about a dog, or even a cat that you have met?  Think about using your five senses to describe the animal.  Have fun writing.

  1. Joy,
Your title made me think the poem was about one thing and it turned out to be something different. It made perfect sense though. That's a sign of a good writer, in my mind. I don't mind being fooled, if it's just a little. ;)

    1. Linda, As often happens I write the poem first and think of a title later. If you have a suggestion for a better title, I'm open to suggestions.
Also, do you think that last line makes this a poem that children would have difficulty with? I'm not sure this is a children's poem.

  2. Hi Joy,
I like the title, although my first thoughts were of a boyfriend/girlfriend first love. Why not consider ending the poem with something that shows the puppies' unconditional love, like a lick to the face, no matter your mood. Choose an action you feel like doing as a result of their acceptance of you, like rolling down a hill, running circles, etc. I don't know. Something playful. You'll know what's right for you. Have fun!
