The Hairy Eyeball

Auntie Dee, copyright 2015

My Auntie Dee
has a bushy brow.
When she looks at me,
HOLY COW!

I'm up in a tree
where I like to crawl
when Auntie gives me,
the hairy eyeball.

"Get down from there!"
I heard her yell.
It scared me so
that I

         OUCH!

Do you know what the hairy eyeball is?  It's that look someone gives you to tell you to stop doing what you are doing.  I'll bet your teacher has given the hairy eyeball, or maybe a librarian when people are being too noisy.  Has anyone ever directed the hairy eyeball at you?  Have you ever given someone the hairy eyeball? What caused it?  How did you feel?  Can you write a poem today about that situation?  Have fun writing.

    1. Thanks, Jama. You've just given me an idea for another poem. I was going to ask you what foods do you think Auntie Dee would be good at cooking. I know the answer. Oh, what fun. I'm so glad I know you. The Peace Cookies looked really good.

  3. Joy, in our house we call that the LOD (or look of death). And did you know, your poems always make me laugh. Thank you for that!

  5. Oh, we have both the hairy eyeball (translation: what fool thing are you doing?) and the Look of Death (translation: stop that before Mean Mommy takes a hand!) LOL Having an arsenal of looks is key. I love the poem and the fall.

    1. Thank you. It is important to me to write poems that look good on the page as well as sounding fun in the ear. It is how I play with poetry. I'm going to see if I can come up with a poem for the Look of Death. What other looks are in your arsenal?

  7. 'When she looks at me/Holy Cow!" love this, Joy. I wonder if my students think this sometimes? I do try not to have a "hairy eyeball".

  8. I like the way "fell" falls, Joy. I am not sure my kids take my hairy eyeball seriously, maybe because at our house we have ridiculous expressions like, "Don't make me smite you with the mighty fist of doom!" or "You're looking to get yourself defenestrated!"

    1. WOW! Your house must be filled with geniuses. I'd love the opportunity to use those phrases. What fun.

      My mother says,
      "Don't make me smite you
      with the fist of doom,"
      right before she sends me
      to stay in my room.
