NIGHT BEETLE

A beetle walked
into the full moon light.
He saw his shadow.
It gave him a fright.

He crawled over a rock.
It was quite a sight,
to see a beetle
out walking at night.

His back it glistened
with a greenish glow,
and where he walked to
I do not know.

Do you like bugs and beetles? What do you like best about them?  Or do bugs bug you? Have you ever watched a bee hive or an ant farm?  Can you write your own poem today about a bug?  Have fun writing.

  1. We had lots of fun examining several beetles at the beach this summer. I see this kind here in Colorado too, Joy. I like the idea of the moon lighting up his back. It does glisten green!

    1. Thanks, Linda. We have one beetle that is about an inch in size that is all green. The one I took the picture of is only about a quarter of an inch in length.

  2. We have quite a few beetles in our woods. They're fascinating, but I'd rather they didn't stray into the house. :) Fun poem!

    1. Hey, if beetles in your house are all you have to complain about, you're ahead of the game. Try tarantulas and scorpions which we have in Arizona.

  3. Very cute. Beetles like this one kind of creep me out, but I do like the poem.

    1. Thanks Rosi. But think of all the extra litter there'd be in the world if we didn't have beetles to help with decomposition.

Cara Bevan, an SCBWI-C member makes gourd art. She was at Bug Festival in Raleigh, NC in September. She also won a illustrator contest at the SCBWI-C Fall Conference. Talented! She could make anyone love looking at bugs!

    1. Linda, I went to Cara Bevan's web site and although she does beautiful work and she has lots of examples of butterflies and spiders (insects and arachnids) I didn't see a beetle. I'll try drawing my own. I have the model.
      Her gourd art is fascinating.

  5. Beetles are not my favorite, but they certainly beat out roaches. :-0 I much prefer our bees and butterflies!

    1. Keri, I like butterflies better too, but this was a dead beetle I took a picture of. I'd feel really bad if it was a dead butterfly.

  6. WOW! 1600 posts -- congrats on an amazing accomplishment!

And love your beetle wonderings. I'm a little sad that the season for insects is winding down with the thermometer. They are so small, and yet account for so much of the life on earth. They keep me humble.

    1. Fall and spring are when our insects are the most plentiful. Living in the desert we get all sorts of creatures. Thanks for stopping by, Mary Lee.
