ONE HOT SUMMER 3

Will the monsoons come?
Will I race outside laughing
with my mouth open
to catch rain drops
on my tongue
once more?

Yes, monsoons will come
and raindrops
will fall on your tongue
and laughter too.

But now it is summer.
Now you can stand in the shade
to feel a few degrees cooler
playing shadow games.
What fun!

It is three days now that I have been using Eileen Spinelli's NOW IT IS WINTER as my mentor text.
What games do you like to play in summertime?  Can you write a poem about your favorite game?  Have fun writing.

Children's poetry must be written with enthusiasm.

  1. Joy,
I loved the reference to shadow games. Do you have a poem about them? You might want to re-post it/them. I know you have a great number of poems archived. You rock!

    1. Nope, I don't think I've written a poem about playing shadow games. I'll have to look through my files, did mention making shadows in one poem...Hum? Wonder what it was.
I'll put this on my list for a future poem. A collection on children's games?

  2. We had a tiny bit of rain in northern California yesterday -- less than a tenth of an inch, but it was cause for celebration anyway. I hope you get a June Monsoon!

    1. Me too. Rain is good any time of the year. Surely by July we will have them.

  3. I've been following your poems, and they are such good captures of this time, Joy. We continue to have strange weather. I have my winter robe out again and it's been raining for a few hours now, plus supposed to be all day tomorrow, then warmer again. I love that middle stanza, "raindrops will fall on your tongue/and laughter, too"-beautiful.

    1. Thanks. Linda. May laughter fall on all of us. Sorry about that winter robe--go get yourself a sexy, flimsy summer robe. Have fun shopping.

  4. Joy, I always enjoy your fun-filled poems. They make me smile and I am sure children do too. The line that resonates with me is "with my mouth open to catch rain dropson my tongue." I've tried that trick but you captured it. I hope you can find one of your spring poems for Spring's Symphony.
