Welcome

This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

Crazy Mad

I'm mad about monkeys,
crazy for cockatoos.
I love cuddly koalas
and jumping kangaroos.

All of these animals
and my own little Ted
leave me no room
when I go to bed.

Do you have a favorite stuffed animal you sleep with?  What do you think your animal dreams about? Can you write a poem about your stuffed animal's dream today? Have fun writing.

I paid the electric bill to read your poem.

Dirty Billy

My baby brother Billy
has a circle on his nose.
Somehow he missed eating
all of his Cheerios.

He wears yellow mustard

red catsup, and something green
on his shorts and t-shirt
that this morning were clean.

Did you get new back-to-school clothes?  What did you wear for the first day of school?  What do the new clothes say to each other when they meet at school? Can you write a poem about clothes today?  Have fun writing.

Today I'll be as happy as a new pair of shoes.

Summer Nights

Summer evening
air starting to cool
people come out
sit/stand at the curb
watch children
play stick ball
and talk story.

Talk Story is a Hawaiian term meaning to chat with one another.  When the weather is nice, neighbors often meet to chat in the street.  Two people start chatting and then another joins in, and another and soon there are half a dozen folks just catching up on neighborhood gossip.  If the road, street or avenue where you live could talk, what would it tell you about your neighborhood?  Try writing about that today.  Have fun.

Today I'll be happier than an egret having lunch on a cow's back.

Rain

It rained again this morning
and now it has stopped.
But the rain keeps coming
with its drop, drip, drop.

Tiny pearls of moisture
creep the palm fronds vein
gathers at  the tip
then drops the jewel again.

I got home from my trip to Australia yesterday and have been trying to catch up since then.  I've just about got my laundry done.  The suitcases are empty.  Tomorrow I'll put them away in the garage.

What are you happy about today?  Can you write about what makes you happy today?

Today I'll be happier than a beach ball bouncing in the sand.
