It rained again this morning
and now it has stopped.
But the rain keeps coming
with its drop, drip, drop.
Tiny pearls of moisture
creep the palm fronds vein
gathers at the tip
then drops the jewel again.
I got home from my trip to Australia yesterday and have been trying to catch up since then. I've just about got my laundry done. The suitcases are empty. Tomorrow I'll put them away in the garage.
What are you happy about today? Can you write about what makes you happy today?
Today I'll be happier than a beach ball bouncing in the sand.
Welcome

Thanks
Thanks for the happy.
It's been a good day.
You came to visit
and we got to play.
It has been another hot, summer day. But somewhere along my day I stumbled upon the line "Thanks for the happy." It is a little bit different and I wanted to put it into a poem. I call this using "fresh" language--saying things in a way you wouldn't normally hear. Can you think of another way to say It has been a good day? Try writing your own poem today using fresh language.
In writing children's poetry, one needs to allow the meaning to emerge at it's own pace.

HAPPY 2015
It is 2015
and I'm so happy.
I was up really late.
I need a nappy.
Oops, I'm not so sure this poem works because in Great Britain a baby's diaper is called a nappy. But, I mean a little nap.
On my walk this mornig I had the local radio station on listening to music. As often happens a line of music will stick in my head. The line was something like--put your sexy on. As that rolled around in my head, I got to thinking what putting your happy on would look like. Using all five senses, sight, sound, smell, touch and taste; what is happy?
I'm Happy
I'm happy as the mud on a hog.
I'm happy as the fleas on a dog.
Happy as bubbles in your bath.
Happy as a popsicle split in half.
Happy as a pumpkin on the vine.
Happy as a cowgirl dancing in line.
Happy as a preacher saying grace.
Happy as the smile upon your face.
Happy as the grass covered in dew.
I'm so happy I know you.
Happy to write poems and bring cheer
Happy to start a new year.
I'm so happy with friends like you.
In 2015 what makes you happy too?
This poem is written in rhyming couplets. Can you practice writing a few couplets? What makes you happy? What are happy smells or tastes for you? If you'd like, you can leave your couplets in the comments below. If HAPPY doesn't work for you, try this same format on other words like grateful, excited, smart, pretty, or a word of your choice. Have fun writing your poem.

I'M HAPPY
copyright 2014, Joy Acey |
There's moon glow inside me.
I'm dancing on air.
Where are my friends?
Will you join me there?
In My Daily Post today, Ben Huberman included a quote from Allen Ginsberg, "Follow your inner moonlight, don't hide the madness."
I loved the idea of having moonlight inside my body and so I wrote this poem. But then I got to thinking about other things that make me happy, that symbolize happiness to me.
There's cotton candy inside me.
I'm feeling so sweet.
I smile,
say HELLO,
to each friend I meet.
There's bubbles inside me.
I'm feeling so light.
My feet, they are dancing.
I feel their delight.
There's a circus inside me.
I feel like the show.
There are lions and tigers
to dance where I go.
OK. So now it is your turn. What are some things that make you happy? Chocolate, swimming, sunshine, parties? How would it make you feel?
So try the format and see what you come up with:
There's a _____________________________ inside me.
I feel like____________________________________.

Have fun thinking and writing today. And please share your creation in the comments below.

FRIDAY
Today is Friday.
Make it a fun day.
Live for today,
not tomorrow.
Try to be happy,
let go of sorrow.
What are you doing today to have fun? What makes you happy a bout today? Can you write a poem about that? It would make me happy. Have fun writing.

New Books
A new book
just arrived
in the mail.
It makes
me happy
without fail.
How do books make you feel? Can you write a poem about that? My contributor copies of THE POETRY FRIDAY ANTHOLOGY FOR SCIENCE, just arrived in the mail and I really like the collection compiled by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong, published by Pomelo Books. I'm off to read some of the other poems. Have fun reading and writing your own poems today.

Who is Happy?
The cats jump for joy.
The dogs leap with glee.
Everyone is happy.
What can
the excitement
be?
What gets you excited? Can you write a poem about excitement today? Answer the question of this poem to make the next verse. What are you passionate about? Do have fun writing your poem. Happy Tuesday.

EARLY SPRING
The weather is warm.
The air is dry.
The sky is blue
as the bluest sky.
Wild flowers bloom
on every hill.
Birds are calling
their lovely trill.
Springtime is coming
what a glorious thrill.
Today is beautiful and I'm happy and grateful. What is making you happy today? Can you write a poem about it?
Yesterday morning on my walk there was one bird sitting in the top of the ocotillo singing up a storm. This morning when I walked past that ocotillo, there were two birds sitting there. I guess the singing bird found someone to sing with him. I think my own life is like that. I have lots of friends around, but unless I open my mouth to sing and say, come join me, new friends don't know they are welcome to come and play. Who can you sing out to today?

MY CASTLE
A pen is a castle
where I want to be
writing so wild
so daring
and free.
Yes, give me a pen
that I may write
happy all day
and into
the night.
Now it is your turn, pick up your pen, your pencil or use a keyboard, and write. Where would you like your writing to take you? What adventure would you like to have? Dream! And then write your poem. Have fun.

I want to remember
to wish you
a happy
September.
This is the month
with 30 remarkable days.
Let see if we can
be happy in 30 ways.
Your challenge for today is to write your own poem about September.

MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD
A bluebird flew
to the top
of tall pine trees
and sang
his warbling
song for me.
He sings
in the morning.
He sings
at noon.
He makes
me happy
with his bluebird tune.
I had fun playing with art again yesterday, so I had to write a poem to go with my picture. A poem that is written in response to another piece of art is called an ekphrastic. Can you write your own ekphrastic poem today?

Happy Mother's Day
Sunday morning,
early and calm.
I'm making breakfast
for my mom.
Mom is waking
in her bed
and that is where
she'll be fed.
Because my mom
is best to me
it's why I want
her day happy.

ME
Sometimes I'm happy.
Sometimes I'm sad.
Sometimes I'm good.
I try not to be bad.
But whatever I am,
whatever you see,
I try to be glad
that I am me.
Today I decide
what I will be
and I'm glad that
I'm happy and me.
How are you feeling on this Monday? It is a new week? What are you going to decide to do this week? Pick one thing to work on this week and see if you can make it happen. Do you have a book you want to finish, or a spelling test to ace? Maybe your goal is to make your bed each morning. What is your goal? Can you write a short poem about it? Have fun.

BE HAPPY
A multitude of small delights constitutes happiness. Charles Baudelaire
It is time to dance.
It is time to sing.
It is time to notice
the little things.
One single flower
or button, or plate,
can make me feel happy,
can make me feel great.
Today I will notice
all little things
like birds at my feeder
and the songs each one sings.
Today I'll be joyful,
and happy, and glad.
I'll be so dog-gone merry
there's no room for sad.
It is so cold today that I'm going to work all day at being a happy me. Can you make a list poem today of all the little things that make you happy?

The Elf
A happy elf
worked all year long
and as she worked
she sang this song:
"Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas,
I make toys
for good
girls and for boys."
All year long
she sang happily
making toys
for you and me.
Now she rests
on a shelf
glad to be
a hard working elf.
Happy Poetry Friday. What are you working on today? Can you write a poem about Santa's elves today?
Today's Poetry Roundup is hosted by Robyn Hood Black. Thanks for stopping by today. For more fun read all the poems I've posted this week. I have a video with Scarves, audio with two other poems this week.

Happy Days
Ms Rosa Bloom
Mr. Chipper Birdsong
sing in praises
all day long.
How they are happy!
How they laugh!
I'm glad they're here
to lighten my path.
