One coyote lopes
down the road.
He sees me and
stops to hold. (I know, this is a slip rhyme.)
Along comes another,
now there are two.
They look at me,
what should they do?
They run up a driveway,
leap a fence,
race in the arroyo, and
I haven't seen them since. (Another slip.)
This is what a I saw on my morning walk. What a gift! I know that ten years from now children will not be able to see coyotes running free in the desert because people will have taken over their habitat. Have fun writing your poem today.
Welcome
This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

Desert Abecedarian
Across the arroyo
Bouncing in the basin
Coyotes call
Down the dry, rocky wash--
Eerie echoes reach
Far into the
Gully-- yipping and yapping
Hanging on a breeze
In the chill desert air.
Jack rabbits and
Kangaroo rats jumping,
Leaping high
Making little
Noise in the night.
Only the bobcat
Pauses to
Quietly creep before
Racing after rabbit prey, then a
Scream pierces the still silence,
Talons caught
Under the fur , and a
Vulture
Wings over the dark
Xeriscape.
Yellow eyes leave
Zilch, nada, nil behind.
I've been having fun playing with abecedarians this week. Can you try your own poem shaped around the alphabet? Have fun playing with this form.
