GIRAFFE

copyright 2014, Joy Acey

Golly Gee!
Look at me.
Can't you see
I'm hungry.
Please, feed me!

This poem is a rhyming five line poem--a quintrain.  (It was a quatrain until I added that extra fifth line.) Can you see the three horns on this Rothschild giraffe? See the eyebrows and eye lashes?  This giraffe has a very soft mouth.  Can you try writing your own quatrain today?

LION

copyright 2014,Joy Acey

A lion sleeps
most of the day,
unless you're a lion cub
who likes to play.

I learned that lions can sleep 16 - 18 hours a day.  But a giraffe only sleeps about 2-6 hours a day.  Which would you rather be, the lion or the giraffe?  Can you write a poem today about being your favorite animal?  Have fun doing your research.

haiku

Maasai Giraffe eats
Umbrella Acacia leaves
stretches his long tongue

Did you know there are three kinds of giraffes? Reticulated, Rothschilds and Maasai. Each one has a different coat pattern. All are very tall. They each have a different habitat. Their long black tonguew can be 18 inches long to reach out and grasp leaves.

Learning about animals can be fun. Can you select an animal to write a poem about today? Enjoy your writing.

THE ANIMALS GIVE THANKS

Thanks said the elephant
eating his grass.
Thanks said the rhino
as he wandered past.

Thanks said the giraffe
munching on leaves.
Thanks said the monkey
swinging through trees.

Thanks said the lion
as he strolled on his way.
We're glad we're not turkeys
on Thanksgiving Day.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving with lots to be thankful for.  Can you write a poem for a friend today?  Have fun writing.

FRIENDS

Joe is a girafee.
Tom is a turtle.

"Come on friend,
Let's go play,"
said Joe.

"Oh, NO!
We cannot
be friends," said Tom.

"Ridiculous.
Why can't we be friends?"
asked Joe.
"I want to know."

"Because you're so tall
and I'm so small
way down here below,"
said Tom.

"Ridiculous,"
repeated Joe.

"You like to eat acacia leaves
high up on acacia trees.
You're so big, you frighten me,"
said Tom pulling into his shell.

"RIDICULOUS!"

"You walk fast
and gallop as you go.
I toddle along.
Turtles go s-l-o-w."

"Ridiculous, I don't think so," said Joe.

"Oh yes," said Tom.
"With four long legs
you're fast when you flee,
and I worry.
You might kick me.
Oh NO!  Friends--
we can never be."

"Hmmmm," thought Joe.
"Let me see.  If I can find
one thing that is the same,
will you then
play a game?"

"I guess, maybe.
But what can that be?
I'm asking you, Joe
with your head
in that tree."

"Tom, that's it," said Joe.
"How we're the same,
I think I know.
I stick out my neck
to get these acacia leaves.
I'll drop some down
for you to see.
Now you can eat along with me.

"But you, little turtle,
must stick out your neck too,
to eat the leaves
I've dropped for you."

"For being good friends
takes more than kisses and pecks
it requires
sticking out our necks."

This is very new, and very rough, but I'm having fun working on a drawing to go with it which is fun for me too.  I'll continue to do some editing and polishing. There are a lot of reversed rhymes, and I'm going to have to work to get rid of these forced rhymes.   This started because I was having fun saying, ridiculous.  And I knew I wanted to use the word.
Can you write your own poem today based upon a single word like ridiculous, shucks, gosh, yes, no, or another word?  Have fun.

Jungle Happiness

It is hot days and cool nights.
It's hiding in the long grass
so you have to carefully
look to see the tigers' stripes.

It's a whole pride of lions
resting in the trees and
zebras and giraffes racing.

It's plants growing large
in the humidity
and when you find a river
it's the elephants trumpeting
and hippos blowing bubbles.

It's watching out for crocodiles
and alligators and flesh eating fish.
And being very careful NOT
to rock the boat.

What would make you happy to be in the jungle?  Can you write your own jungle poem today?  Have fun.

A Golfing Giraffe

Gerald Giraffe
plays golf
on the green.
It's the strangest
sight
I've ever seen.

His legs are spread
in a golfer's stance.
And he wears
plaid golfer pants.

Perhaps he'll make
a hole-in-one.
Gerald Giraffe thinks
playing golf is fun.

Happy Friday.  There are a lot of "G"s in this poem.  Is there a "g" in your name?  The name of your town?  Street?  Can you write your own "G" poem?  I hope you have giggling fun writing.
