ELEPHANT WALK

The elephant walks,
thunk, Thunk, THUNK!
With big, flapping ears
and a long gray trunk.

This is an action rhyme.  Can you walk three steps with heavy feet making the thunk, Thunk, THUNK? Can you use your hands to flap big ears?  Can you make a long trunk using your arms?  Sometimes it is fun to walk like the animals.  For your poetry challenge for today, can you pick an animal and write your own poem about how that animal moves? For more elephant activities check here.
   How about a sloth?

Creep, Cr-e-e-p, cr-e-e-e-p,
a sloth moves through the trees.
He steps
so slowly
he barely
s-h-a-k-e-s
the leaves.

Your poems can inspire others.

  1. Joy,
I'd love to participate in a playtime with you leading action rhymes. What fun! I hope I can do that in person one day! Is this notebook filled with action rhymes? LOVE the patterns. I remember seeing this cover before or is this one slightly different? Thanks for sharing. It's great!

    1. Nope, you're right. It is the picture I used once before. I was going to use one of the elephant pictures I took on safari, but this came up first, so, since I was in a hurry, I used this one.
This poem started because my sister and I were talking about an elephant action rhyme, but neither of us could remember the rhyme--all we could remember was walking like an elephant. My 4 month-old deaf grand-niece has a teacher come to her house once or twice a week to try to teach Callie signing. She is a very lucky girl since they knew almost since birth that she is deaf. She has bright pink ear molds and her current favorite song is Itsy-Bitsy Spider. Both her parents are deaf, so she should pick up signing rather quickly.

  2. I bet you do some signing yourself. Am I right? I know Callie would enjoy your drawing of an elephant. Thanks for sharing this story. I wish Callie all the best.

    2. Actually Linda, my sister (Callie's Grandmother) told me today that Callie is scheduled to have Cochlear implant surgery in December.
