Welcome

This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

Zoe Reads

Books from our library,
Zoe loves to read,
stories about princesses
and how to succeed.

Zoe reads books
on how to draw,
and how to make
dolls from straw.

She has everything
she may need
because Zoe has
lots of books to read.

Do you have a book you're reading right now?  What kinds of books do you like to read?  I hope you're reading lots of books this summer.  Can yu try writing a persona poem today in the voice of your favorite book, or a character from a book?  What would it or he or she tell you?  I know lots of books that would complain about being dog-eared, having someone fold the corner of the page over to keep the reader's place instead of using a book mark.  Hve fun writing your poem.

Some of my best friends are books.

  1. Joy,
I loved the suggestion of a persona poem. I can imagine two books in a conversation and one is upset about being dog-eared and the other takes it as a compliment that he is loved! I'm so glad you're spending time teaching poetry writing workshops. I heard about your invitation to present at Washington state, I believe. Am I right?

    1. Yes, I'm presenting at the first Poetry Camp at Western Washington University on Oct. 1. There will be a gathering of over 40 children's poets and I'm so excited to be a part of it.
Thanks for the suggestion of a two part poem between two books. It sounds like a fun poem to craft. I'll have to work on it.
Take care of yourself, dear friend.
