Happy National Hug Day
I'll send you a hug
or maybe send two
to make this a good
hug day for you.
I'll extend my arms
to all that I meet.
I'll even hug strangers
I meet on the street.
Who can you give a hug to today? Would you like to try writing your own HUG poem? Have fun writing. Is there anyone you wouldn't want a hug from? Oh, now my mind is going. Have a great day.
Happiness makes up in height what it lacks in length. Robert Frost
Welcome
This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

IF I WERE
If I were hot cocoa
And you were the cup
I'd warm you,
you'd hug me
then I'd be drunk up.
I've been playing with taking two objects and putting them together to see how they would interact.
If I were the water
and you were the pool,
we'd warm in the sunshine
and keep swimmers cool.
If I were a dog
and you were my rug
would you keep me warm,
would you give me a hug?
If I were a sea turtle
and you were the sea
would we swim with the dolphins,
would you want to be me?
If you were paper
and I were a pen
we'd write children's poetry.
Let us begin.
So, here is your challenge for today--take two (or more objects) and put them together. See what you get for your poem. Have fun experimenting and writing.

PILLOWS, PILLOWS, PILLOWS
What a lovely sight!
Pillows, pillows, pillows
on my left
and my right.
Pink, blue, yellow,
brown, green, white.
I have an idea,
let's have a pillow fight
and we don't even have
to wait
for tonight.
Now, I've shown you this toon picture of pillows and presented my poem, but I also wanted to share a poem by my friend Marcia Diane. (She is the person who introduced me to Pippin, the little black and white pony with beautiful blue eyes that I've pictured here earlier and wrote a poem for him.) Her poem is about feelings, and I thought it would be a good one for discussing feelings. Marcia, Thank you for sharing your poem with us.
SAD AND BLUE
by M. Diane
Did you ever hug a
pillow
when you’re sad
and blue?
Have you ever
hugged
a pillow
right up close to
you?
Have you ever
hugged
a pillow
when your mom’s to
busy to hug you
or your dad’s not
around
and your brother’s
acting like a clown?
Did you ever hug a
pillow
up close to you?
It’s ever so
lovely
a thing to do.
M. Diane
Your challenge for today is to write your own poem about a feeling you've had, or you can write about your own pillow and how it makes you feel. Have fun.
POETRY FRIDAY is hosted over at Keri's today. Head over there if you'd like to read more children's poetry. Keri, thank you for hosting us.

Big Bear Hug
Toes tap.
Fingers snap.
Knuckles rap.
Hands clap.
Arms flap.
Wrap around you
In a Big Bear Hug.
This is an action poem. Can you act out the lines? Now have fun trying to write your own action poem. What actions do you want to include?
