This little spine poem definitely is a reverso, it can be read either down or up. Have a happy Sunday and have fun trying to write your own poems today.
Love it, Joy. Now, a question about your process when writing spine poems: Which comes first the shape or the topic or does it vary?
ReplyDeleteLinda,
DeleteThe topic came first. I'm looking for objects with movement. Then I ask myself, how can I show that movement on the page. Most things naturally fall down thanks to gravity. So, what are some things that go up? I often explore opposites--it is the way a lot of words are defined, by their opposite. I'm still brainstorming about things that move diagonally.
I often try to look at objects in a different or new light. What can I say about an object that hasn't already been said before?
Thank you for asking.
Great response, Joy. I thought others would want to know how you pick topics too. Fun!
DeleteLinda,
DeleteAt my children's poetry critique group meeting this week, my friend Charline Profiri pointed out to make a "W" your pencil goes down, up, down up. A poem about a worm that makes the letter w, isn't that cool?
