This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

It is the job of poetry to clean up our word-clogged reality by creating silences around things. --Stephen Mallarme

It is finding the truth, no need to lie.
It's munching on watermelon and letting seeds fly.
It's a letter that comes with a card in the mail.
It's the lacy silver threads left by a garden snail.
It's daffodil trumpets covering the hill.
It's a deer at the creek, drinking her fill.
It's giggling and laughing and being absurd.
It's reading a haiku and feeling each word.

It's a dragon who blows flames, loud and hardy.

It's fairies in the garden having a tea party.

This is my progressive poem for National Poetry Month.  Each day I'll add a line to this list poem of what poetry is to me.  What is poetry to you?  You're welcome to leave suggestions for lines for me.

Try writing your own poem today.  What would your life be like without poetry?  I know that poetry makes me very happy and I think I'd be sad, unhappy if I couldn't surround myself with poetry.  Have a great week.

  1. Hi Joy, finally got back to replying to your wonderful lines of 'what is poetry'. It's been fun to see what you've written. Here's a couplet for you:

It's hundreds and hundreds of words for creating
poems of ring-around-a-rosie kind of playing.

  2. Very interesting, Linda. Thank you for your contribution.

  3. Linda, for me I needed those couplets to rhyme. So, how about:

It's hundreds and hundreds of words for creating.
It's discovering a fossil for carbon dating.

Shoot the meter is off with that carbon--I'll keep playing with this.

I like the idea of ring-around-a-rosie poems. I'm going to have to do some more research on this one. Did you know in England the kids had a rhyme chant game where the "it" person played being dead? Can't remember the name of that one either this morning.
