TIGER POEM

I see a tiger in the jungle
and his eyes are shining bright.

I see a tiger in the jungle
and his teeth are big and white.

I see a tiger in the jungle
and he's running fast and free.

I see a tiger in the jungle
and he is going to eat. . .

This poem uses a repetitive line, "I see a tiger in the jungle," which makes it like a chant and easy to use as a poem in 2 voices.  One person (or half the group) can say the first line of each stanza, and the second person (or second half of the group) can say the second line of each stanza.  Then everyone can say the last word together.  Have you tried writing a poem that can be used by two voices?

  2. Great poem, Joy! I can imagine a hand clapping pattern underneath the voices.

  3. Linda,
Yes, this is an easy form to use for a co-operative writing exercise. Take any animal and form a good first line for repeating and then work together for the second line in each stanza. My friends often come up with better lines than I would ever think of.

    2. Bara, You could try this poem as a geography lesson, with a first line like:
      Children from Napal
      are very polite
      Children from Nepal
      like to read and write
      Children from Nepal
      like to eat --------
The children can help make up the second line and the last stanza could be something like:
      Children from Nepal
are happy in what they do.
      Children from Nepal
are friends to me and you.

Or you could pick whatever country your ESL kids are from. I used Nepal because I met a sweet young boy at my library from Nepal.
