TOO MANY BABIES

Rebecca has plenty of Beanie Babies®
Her whole collection is something crazy--
      A gorilla,
           An elephant,
                A cockatoo,

     A moose,
          A bunny,
               Or is it two?

She even has a pig
     in a hat of daisies.
And her Dalmatian
     has a tag for rabies.

Altogether Rebecca has 21

     or 19, maybe.

Do you have a collection?   Of rocks, books, baseball cards, or nail polish?  My friend children's poet Amy Ludwig VanDerwater has a collection of buttons she is adding to. You might enjoy visiting her blog by clicking on her name in the line above.  Can you write a poem about collecting things today?  Have fun writing.

Donna over at Mainelywrite is hosting the Poetry Friday Roundup today.  Thanks Donna.  You'll find lots of links to some great children's poems here.

  1. Fun poem, great last line. :)

Alas, I am a "great" collector. Where shall I begin? Bears, watches, teapots, pens, blogs . . .

    1. Oh Jama, I do love all your interesting dishes that is one of the reasons I LOVE visiting your blog.

  2. I have a cockatoo Beanie - and a stork. That's it though. I'm trying to stop collecting after the Cabbage Patch fiasco in the 1980's. You know, they are worth exactly what I paid for them? Less, in today's money.

    1. O h, I had forgotten about the Cabbage Patch Kids. I do have a set of the trading cards. Do you remember those terrible things? Were they called Garbage Pail Kids? My son collected them and organized all the pairs in a notebook. I also have a whole box of his baseball cards.

  3. Amazingly, I have friends who keep a huge collection of beanie babies for children who come visit, Joy! They will delight in your poem. I sold a few of my collections last year in my estate sale, but have kept some-one I love is a 'small' collection of old ceramic planters-mostly bright colors, but I have one shelf of small, only white ones. Do you collect beanie babies?

    1. Nope, Linda,
I collect antique dishes. I have several sets of blue ware, and pre WWII dishes. I love it when friends drop by and I can serve them tea or lunch on my dishes. I think that is why I love visiting Jama Rattigan's blog because she has so many fun dishes,

  4. This made me laugh. My friend posted this link about Beanie Babies earlier this week: http://radionowindy.com/1341176/remember-beanie-babies-hope-you-kept-your-because-they-could-make-you-rich/.

When I stumbled upon your poem, I couldn't help but laugh. We have quite a collection of these as well still boxed in a closet somewhere. We have the big beanies and of course the small ones given in McDonald's Happy Meals.

Altogether we have at least 19 or 20 --- and their owners are now well beyond that in years.

    Thanks for the chuckle,
    Cathy

    1. I certainly hope Rebecca kept all of the Beanie Babies she collected when she was about 10 or 11. Her mother was a single mom and they didn't have a lot of money. So I'm hoping they have lots of money now. The problem with collecting things as an investment is that you have to find someone to sell the stuff to who will pay the big prices, but, what usually happens is a third party gets involved and they want 40%. Think of all the auctioneers who support themselves by selling other peoples' stuff.

  5. Hi Joy,
I never intended to collect bells, but being a teacher, several were given to me. I do have a jar of buttons because they remind me of someone I knew growing up. There are lots of frogs in my house, because my husband collects them--not I.

    1. Ah Linda, I'm so glad you mentioned bells. Is there a bell day? I have a cousin who collects bells, she has hundreds. They do make nice music.

  6. Hi there Joy, I have a collection of dreams, wishes, magical incantations all wrapped in my booksbooksbooks. Mountains of them. Waiting to be read and opened again and again. Thanks for this beautiful poem.
