Welcome

This is my playground for poetry written for children with ideas and inspiration for writing your own poems. Come on in. Sit for a spell, have a cup of words to swirl around and make your own cup of poetry. I'm so glad you are here. I hope you'll find the Kingdom of Poetry a fun place to be.

STORM

The winds blew,
the lightning flashed,
the rains came down
and the thunder crashed.
Oh what a lovely storm.

Our monsoon rains are coming and it is so lovely to have a break from the heat.  Can you write a poem today about some aspect of the weather?  Perhaps you can use the weather for a metaphor for your relationship with some one you know.  Have fun writing.

The Poetry Friday roundup is hosted this week by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong over at http://poetryforchildren.blogspot.com/    Thanks to the greatest editors ever.  I appreciate your hard work in bringing poetry to children and teachers.

  1. Joy, glad you're getting some relief! Your poem makes me think about how we say windS and rainS but not lightningS and thunderS. Interesting...

  2. This is a great poem to use with primary students to teach word choice and active verbs. Speaking of word choice, ever since we asked you to reconsider the word "haboobs" in one of your poems for The Poetry Friday Anthology (due to my nervous-Nellie predictions of boys' reactions), I've seen the word in print or heard it on weather reports about a dozen times!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Janet. I'm really excited about the next anthology. It sounds like it is going to be so much fun. Since you are now seeing the word haboob in print more often does that mean that the curve has now caught up with me?
