haiku

on the lady slipper
bending in the late day breeze
a dragonfly rests

Happy Sunday.  What did you do today?  What did you see?  Can you write a haiku about your day?  Have fun counting syllables.

Who Am I?

I've two sets of lacy wings
and no matter how hard you try
you can't fly faster than me,
I'm a __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __.

I'm  still working on insect riddle poems.  I'm swimming in riddles and having so much fun.  Speaking of swimming, can you write your own riddle poem today?  Try using an ocean animal.  Have fun.

2013 DAYS OF MIRACLE AND WONDER

These are the days of miracle and wonder.
  Paul Simon

New Year's Eve day
I'm sitting on the beach
watching the sun rise.

The chickens sing
their morning song.
Life is good.

I see a dragonfly
zip along.
Someone is plunking
a ukulele song.

Life doesn't get
any better than this.

A stunning rainbow
bright color and  energy
appears over the
crisp salty waves.

And I think
I am living
my best life.

What more
could I want
on this heavenly isle?

Then all in a flash
I see a whale breach
and I smile.

ALOHA.

My thanks to the talented Sandy McMaster for this poem. She is the inspiration.  Sandy plays ukuele to accompany her husband Doug McMaster, slack key wizard,  who recently was declared one of Hawaii's island treasures.
I hope your first day of 2013 is filled with miracles and wonder.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Your writing challenge for today is to write a short poem about the first thing you notice in 2013.

Dragonfly Tea Party

This poem is for the extraordinary children's poet David Harrison, who had a dragonfly come visit him yesterday. (You can see a picture of the dragonfly by clicking your cursor over his name.)

     I wish I were a princess.
     I'd fly with fairy wings.
     I'd live within the garden
     to see what summer brings.

     I'd have a mushroom
     for my table
     and a toadstool
     for my seat,
     and there I'd dine
     on lovely food
     with lots of tasty treats.

     When you come to visit
we'll have lots of food to eat.
We'll dine on little fairy cakes
     and other yummy sweets.

We will drink the dew drops
and snail shell cups of tea
when you come into the garden
      for our dragonfly party.

I'm having so much fun with the thought of being a Dragonfly Princess that
I want to get out my colored pencils to draw a picture to go with my poem.  Do you have a poem (one of your own or someone else's) you'd like to draw a picture for?  OK, so today let's try drawing instead of writing.  Have fun.  This fairy princess loves the color pink.  Happy Saturday.

Dragonfly

Red dragon fly
quiet, quick and
very shy.

Listen, you'll hear him sigh
fast with photos
as he flits by.

I've always felt dragonflies were magical creatures.  Right up there with unicorns and dragons.  I've never seen a red dragonfly before, have you?  Today's poetry challenge is to write a poem about an insect.  And since insects are very small, can you make this a small poem?  Have fun.
