The Needle Speaks.

Said the needle
to the thread,
"I've got my eye
on you.
I can poke,
you can pull,
and I will slide
you through."

Do you like to sew?  What are some other things needles are used for?  What do you think the thread would say to the button or the needle?  Your poetry challenge for today is to write a poem in response to mine.  Or can you try writing a riddle poem for a button, thread or a needle?  Have fun with your writing.

Everybody here is a somebody.  I'm a somebody too.

MY FRIEND

I have a friend
who plays with me.
He comes on sunny days.

But if the skies
are gray or dark
my friend will stay away.

I think he is
attached to me.
He's stuck on to my feet.

He doesn't venture
far away. He hides
beneath my seat.

Sometimes I see him
on the wall, and when
I move my arms.

He turns into animals
the kinds you find
on farms.

Can you guess
who my friend is,
he doesn't wear a halo?

He's dark and black,
and looks like me
because he is my shadow.

When was the last time you looked at your shadow?  Did you play games with your shadow?  Can you try writing your own riddle poem or one about your shadow?  Have fun writing.

Children's poets nab the best words.

WHO AM I?

She zips around town,
with her cat named Doom.
The witch rides on me,
I am her __ __ __ __ __.

This is a riddle poem, but it is also a mask, or persona poem.  If you were a broom, what would you be made of?  Who would have made you?  How would you have become magical, if you are?  Where would you live?  Would you play quidich?  What can you tell us about your life and the person who rides you?  If you live at a school, what do you do after the children all go home?  How do you get along with the other brooms?  What advice would you give us?  Can you write today about being a broom?  Have fun.

Who Am I?

I've two sets of lacy wings
and no matter how hard you try
you can't fly faster than me,
I'm a __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __.

I'm  still working on insect riddle poems.  I'm swimming in riddles and having so much fun.  Speaking of swimming, can you write your own riddle poem today?  Try using an ocean animal.  Have fun.

WHO MOVED THE RUBBERTREE

I say, "I can."
You say, "I can't."
I'll keep trying
because I'm an __ __ __.

I had fun writing another riddle poem.  I hope you had fun writing too.
Can you write a poem for an insect today?  Have fun writing.

I rub my legs and make a noise,
kept in a cage by Chinese boys.
My music they say brings luck and cheer.
Some use me to tell the temperature.
As a favorite insect many pick it.
Hear me chirp, I am a __ __ __ __ __ __ __.

The Poetry Friday Roundup is hosted this week over at Arthor Amok.  Thanks for hosting us.

Riddle Poem

We have a head,
but we do not think.
You wash us off
in the kitchen sink.
You search the frig
when you want to get us,
Leafy and green,
have you guessed
we're the lettuce?

Can you write your own riddle poem today?  Have fun writing.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

Guess Who

Who always makes me
feel like a star?
Who drives me around
in the family car?

Who cooks for me
and packs my lunch?
I love this person
a whole big bunch.

Who changes the sheets
on my bed?
And cuts the hair
upon my head?

Who helps me with
my school homework
and keeps me from being
too big a jerk?

Who puts the bandages
on my scraped knees?
And at bedtime
reads to me?

Who never forgets Christmas
or my birthday?
You're really terrific,
what can I say?

I love you, Mom.
You're lots of fun.
I'll always be
your loving son.

I hope you have a great Mother's Day.  What fun things have you got planned for today?  Can you make a list of the things your mom, or someone else does for you?  Perhaps it is a friend, your dog, the school librarian, your grandma, or a teacher.  Then try writing your own GUESS WHO poem to say thank you to that person. In England they don't celebrate Mother's Day on the same Sunday that we do here in the United States, and they call it Mothering Sunday to honor all the folks who do the job of mothering others.  This would include day care workers, nurses, grand-parents, aunts and uncles, too.  Have fun writing your poem.

GUESS WHO?

Who is out on Halloween night

riding a broom in the pale moon light?

Who sits behind on the witch's broom

and holds on tight with every ZOOM?

Who purrs a loud kitty keen,

to wish us all

HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

Now, I'm going to try this poem with an echo.  Let's see if it will work?  This way, it becomes a poem for two voices.  The echo is a repeat by students, and everyone joins in on the last line.
Who is out on Halloween night
                                               on Halloween night

riding a broom in the pale moon light?
                                              in the pale moon light?

Who sits behind on the witch's broom
                                              on the witch's broom

and holds on tight with every ZOOM?
                                              with every ZOOM?

Who purrs a loud kitty keen,
                                             a loud kitty keen

to wish us all

HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

I hope you have a great Halloween.  Today's poem is a riddle poem.  Can you write your own riddles for some of the things Halloween?  My first thought was a jack-o-lantern.

Do not think
it is hog wash.
Before he changed
he was an orange squash.

I had to use my rhyming dictionary for that one.  There aren't a lot a great words to rhyme with squash.  Hey, just have fun.  We're not trying for Shakespearean sonnets here.  Enjoy your holiday and make poetry a part of it.

Fruit Salad

Please understand,
eating fruit, I like
a lot.  I find it
cheers me and makes me
happy and healthy.

A peach is a furry fruit
I bite in soft and sweet.
Tasty and yummy
it's a fruit I like to eat.

Can you identify where I've used alliteration in these poems?
What is your favorite fruit?  Do you eat fruit at lunch?  Can you write your own poem today about a piece of fruit?  If you had a bunch of grapes what do you think one grape would say to another?  Sounds like a riddle poem doesn't it?

Q: What did one grape say to another?
A: Welcome to our bunch
     stick around my purple brother
and we'll have you for lunch.

Oh, I think that is bad.  Definitely needs some work.  Anyway, have fun writing.
Happy May.

Baby's Present

                                Can    You
guess
what
is this gift under the Christmas
tree, wrapped in pretty  paper
with a shiny   red bow?  It is a
present, not   for me. The   gift
tag says, it is for BABY. If you
shake the square box , can you
guess? It hardly makes a sound.
It   does  not rattle, it only rolls.
That  is  its  only  noise,  except
for  a   tinkling bell  that   rings
with a muffled sound.  It is soft.
It is round.Baby will surely clap
with glee, when he finally  gets
to see what is inside this pressy.

So could you guess what present Baby is getting under the Christmas tree?  Can you see the ball inside the package?  I do hope this present presents the way it shows up on my screen, but if you are viewing this on your cell phone, I know the letters wrap.  It is supposed to look like a green wrapped Christmas present with a red ribbon and bow.  Inside you should be able to see the light blue ball that is Baby's present.   I still haven't got the bow on the top right, every time I start to adjust that spacing, an extra blank line is inserted.  RATS!  This is a shaped prose poem.  Can you write your own concrete poem for a Christmas object?
