Chicken Dance

ink, Joy Acey, 2016
Rooster likes
to dance.
He's the king
of romance.
Hen scratches
in the dirt.
Struts and clucks
as she flirts.
Chickens think
they're really hep
as they do
the chicken
two-step.

I got to play with my ink today.  I imagine I'm going to be trying to draw a lot more chickens in a lot of different media.  Do you like to dance?  Does the dog?  How about the cat?  Pick an animal, any animal and write a poem about it dancing today.  Have fun.

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.  Robert Frost

  1. Bawk Bawk! Fun poem. What a great rooster drawing -- and the king of romance is just in time for Valentine's Day. :)

    1. Bawk, Bawk, back at ya Jama. I love the chickens of Kauai. They are so much fun to watch. Sure wish I could get some eggs out of the deal though.

  2. I like Jama's idea. A rooster on a Valentine's card. Fun poem, Joy!

    1. Thanks, Linda. I'll have to try giving my rooster some red feathers. Oh, I bet we could come up all sorts of chicken related puns for valentines cards.

    1. But of course, Joan. Don't all animals know how to dance with abandon?

    1. Thanks, Molly. My art is just for fun and to decorate some of my poems. I'm just pleased when people can tell what it is I'm drawing.

  5. Very cute. I know there are a lot of cute chickens running around loose in Hawaii. I guess you have some in your new neighborhood.

    1. Oh, Rosi, You don't know the half of it. There are whole flocks of feral chickens in my neighborhood. There are ducks, egrets and cows too.

  7. Hi Joy, love the poem and the sketch. Do you have lots of chickens running & strutting & clucking about? You've started my imagination, dancing cats, horses, goats, hm-m. And to what music?

    1. Oh yes, I'm glad your imagination is going. I'll have to see if I can link to my own poem TEACHING AN OSTRICH TO DANCE that I posted on this blog. And now you've got me thinking about all the animals dancing.

  8. Your drawing certainly captures the joy of that rooster! I love the idea of dancing animals, but our neighbors have a rooster who wakes us up at all hours, so I'd rather not think of him!

    1. Thanks, Mary Lee. I can't wait to try this guy in pastels. My sister and I were having a discussion about which is easier, water colors or pastels. I said pastels because I have more control of the colors. She thought water colors. Now I guess I'm going to have to try both to find out. What do you think?

  10. Joy, I love the Frost quote that you posted. I would like to write about that and use the quote with compliments to you in my new gallery ad. Thanks.

    1. No need to waste space complimenting me. Just give credit to Frost, he's the guy that came up with the words.

  11. Oh, of course, the chicken sketch and poem are delightful. You could consider sending me a drawing with a poem for Winter Wanderings. That would be a departure from photos and very creative indeed.

  12. Love your rooster-hen romance. And your drawing captures rooster's cock-of-the-barnyard attitude perfectly! Fun post.

    1. Oh that there were a barnyard, Violet. The chickens in Kauai are feral. So instead our chickens are cock-of-the-world. In the '80s there was still illegal cock-fighting on the island, and when Hurricane Iniki blew through all the chicken coops were destroyed. No one knew how to get the chickens back to their rightful owners, and people were too busy recovering from all the damage to worry about chickens, so the chickens run wild to this day.
