Happy Friday

POETRY PAINTBOX

Take out your poetry paintbox
to paint me a picture
of a tropical isle
where the chickens all sing.

In water colors wonderful
show me the waves crest
in white foaming churn
for a shore racing dance
that goes zing.

Poise with your paintbrush
in warm sunny colors
to paint palm trees,
their leaves folding
for prayer from a breeze
on this beautiful day.

This is a free verse poem that uses alliteration, assonance and some internal rhyme.
I have moved to the Island of Kauai.  Each day I am a little more settled.  I still have lots of boxes to unpack but my house actually is starting to feel like home.  I do still wake up feeling like I'm on vacation and I have a hard time believing I'm living this wonderful life.
What are some things you like about your life?  What are you grateful for?  If you took out your own poetry paintbox, what words would you use to paint me a picture?  Your poetry challenge for today is to write a poem picture of something you like about your life.  Have fun stretching with this one.

  1. The images from your poetry paintbox create a very different image from the Midwestern winter surrounding me, but I love the challenge of writing my own picture.

    1. Yup. it is, if I can only get all the boxes empties and things put away I'll be more settled.

  3. Hi Joy, I'm sorry I haven't been around much...things have been crazy here, but I'm sure you know what 'busy' is like, now that you're living far from the mainland! Nice imagery in the poem...I love the sun & sand, and am just a bit envious of your new place of residence! Have a good weekend, and enjoy your new surroundings.

    1. Thanks, Matt. My busy doesn't have four small feet running around undoing what I've cleaned up. Plus my spouse is back on the mainland getting some work done there--so there is only me to take care of. I've continued to empty boxes. I AM enjoying my new digs. I loved your haiku and picture.

  4. It must feel like vacation, Joy. I'm so glad you're getting settled in to that beautiful place. I love the poem, "palm trees,/their leaves folding
/for prayer from a breeze." Lovely as I sit here remembering my "vacations".

    1. On your move, how long did it take you to feel settled?

  6. Joy, I must admit when you have been writing about Hawaii I did not realize that you moved there. What a dreamlike existence it must be for you. Your poetry paintbox is filled with many glorious treats today. Thanks for the opportunity to view a beautiful beach scene when NY has chilled temperatures. You have given me the incentive to drive down to the beach this weekend despite the cold. Perhaps, you would like to offer a poem about winter in a tropical paradise for my next gallery.

    1. Carol, thanks for the invitation, but I'm not feeling winter yet. I go barefoot in the house, wear t-shirts and shorts most of the time. It was 80 degrees yesterday. So, until I live here for a year and can experience the differences between winter and summer, I'm going to pass, unless some great inspiration hits me.
I do hope you make it to the shore this weekend. There is something very renewing about watching water, isn't there?

    1. I am totally enjoying myself. Boy, do I have a lot of old work that I've never done anything with. I'm looking forward to having all the boxes emptied so I can settle into work.

  8. It will be fun to read poems of ocean and island instead of desert and heat!

    1. Yes, it is a totally different kind of sand and it is a little strange to wake up each morning to the surf report on the radio.

  9. I'd love to be in surroundings that prompt me to paint pictures of palm trees and singing chickens! My poetry paintbox:

shades of taupe and grey and brown
    where mallards circle
    and the rains weep down

    1. Thank you for sharing, Violet. I can see the green feathers on the mallards. It always amazes me how many shades of green there are.

    1. Oh, wouldn't we all love to feel like we were on vacation all year long? Yes, Kauai is a very spiritual place, replenishing and relaxing.
