Great Blue Herons

Three great gray herons
came to the lake today.
In among the bracken
is where they stay.

Eating up the minnows
and other little fish,
the herons think this restaurant
is very de-lish.

They'll lay an egg in a nest
high among the trees.
Along the shore of our lake
is everything they need.

Have you ever watched a great blue heron fly over a lake?  They look so awkward flapping their wings to take off, and then they fold their legs back  and become a long dart to fly over water looking for dinner.  Can you draw a picture of your favorite bird today, and then try writing a haiku.

The water color above I painted.  It is another one of the art projects I did with my sister while she was here visiting.

  1. What a beautiful watercolor, Joy! The colors and mood are soft and calming. They call the viewer to stillness of which the herons are masters. I love the rhythm of the poem. Great haiku. I especially like "swoop the lake'. You are a lady of MANY talents.

    1. Thanks Cory.
I hope all is well with you and that you are still celebrating your winning poem with the Springfield Writer's Guild competition. Your photography of the morning glory to go with the poem is beautiful.

  2. Joy,

Love this one, Joy. I'm glad I didn't miss it. It's de-lish. A treat for the eye and the ear. I learned a few facts too. Outstanding!

  3. Thank you Linda. Great Blue Herons are beautiful birds.
