Song Dog, Canis latrans

The moon shines silver
in slivery light.
Saguaro shadows
are dark this night.

When out in the scrub
the wind whispers
a trilling refrain,
that echos
       and echos
            repeating again.

Yee, Yee, Yee,
Yip, yip, yip, yip,yip,yip.
Coyotes are tracking tonight.

  1. Coyotes are interesting creatures. Sly as a fox and a better sense of humor.

I enjoy reading your poems. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Have you passed the two year mark yet? I am amazed by you.

    1. Thanks Joan. April 20th, I believe marks the 2 year anniversary. I'm hoping I make it. I love your description of the coyote. Had you ever heard them called Song Dogs before? Thank you for leaving a comment.

  2. Hi, Joy. I could hear this poem set to music, sung around a campfire. It has a cowboy feel!

    1. Thank you. I love poems set to music. You supply the music and I'll supply the poem. Glad you can feel like a cowgirl, yee-haw!

  5. I've camped in the Tucson area with my students, Joy. You've created the atmosphere perfectly. It was eery hearing that 'yip, yip' at night.

  6. I had never heard coyotes called Song Dogs before, but it fits so perfectly. I do wonder how the name came about. Do you think it is a translation for some Indian words? I'm going to do some research.
